Soil settlement occurs when sub-surface soil layers compress under added weight, expelling pore water and rearranging solid particles into a denser configuration. Neglecting this crucial factor can lead to uneven pavement sinking, severe structural cracking, and disrupted backyard drainage channels.
This calculator relies on established geotechnical principles, specifically Terzaghi's consolidation theory. For normally consolidated fine-grained soils, primary compression settlement ($S_c$) is determined using the compression index equation:
$$S_c = \frac{C_c \cdot H_0}{1 + e_0} \log_{10}\left(\frac{p_0 + \Delta P}{p_0}\right)$$
Where $C_c$ represents the compression index, $H_0$ is the initial stratum thickness, $e_0$ is the initial void ratio, $p_0$ is initial effective overburden pressure, and $\Delta P$ is the induced surface stress increment from landscape loads.
