Formula Used

Gross area = surface length × surface height, unless direct area is entered.

Net area = gross area − opening deductions.

Exposed width in feet = exposed width in inches ÷ 12.

Coverage per board = board length × exposed width in feet.

Good planning starts with net surface area. Measure the length and height of the wall or ceiling. Subtract windows, doors, vents, and other openings. Then divide the net square feet by one board's exposed coverage. The tool also adds waste. Waste covers trimming, end matching, grain selection, damaged boards, and mistakes. A small room may need higher waste, because short runs create more offcuts.

Board length matters. Longer boards cover more area per piece and reduce seams. Shorter boards can be easier to handle. They may also fit elevators, stairs, or tight rooms.
