Attribute Planning Guide

Why Attributes Matter

An attribute calculator helps a player review the six core ability scores before play begins. Strength affects carrying power and many melee attacks. Dexterity supports initiative, armor class, stealth, and ranged attacks. Constitution improves durability. Intelligence supports knowledge checks. Wisdom helps awareness and survival. Charisma supports social influence and many spellcasting builds.

Use It Before Session One

This tool is useful during character creation. It gives a clear view of scores, modifiers, saving throws, passive perception, and point buy cost. It also helps compare several build ideas. A player can test a strong warrior, careful scout, wise healer, or charming speaker without rewriting a sheet each time.

Understand Modifiers

The modifier is often more important than the raw score. A score of 14 gives a +2 modifier. A score of 15 also gives +2. That means some builds can save points by stopping at an even number. Other builds may keep an odd score when a later improvement is planned.

Plan Point Buy Carefully

Point buy usually rewards balanced choices. Very high starting scores cost more. Low scores create weaknesses. The calculator shows when a score is outside the normal point buy range. This is helpful when using rolled scores, house rules, or special bonuses.

Check Saves and Utility

Saving throws protect characters from danger. A proficient save can change a risky encounter. The calculator adds proficiency and optional bonuses to each selected save. It also displays passive perception, initiative, carrying capacity, and lifting power. These values matter during travel, traps, surprise, and exploration.

Export Your Results

After testing a build, export the result. The CSV file works well for records and comparison. The PDF option gives a simple printable summary. Keep one copy for the player and one for the game master. Clear numbers reduce mistakes during fast scenes.

FAQs

What does this attribute calculator do?

It calculates final ability scores, modifiers, saving throws, point buy cost, initiative, passive perception, carrying capacity, and lifting power for a 5e character.

How is an ability modifier calculated?

The modifier is found with floor((score - 10) / 2). For example, a score of 16 gives a +3 modifier.

Can I use rolled ability scores?

Yes. Enter rolled scores directly. The point buy field may show that a score is outside the standard 8 to 15 range.

What should I enter in the bonus field?

Enter any racial, species, feat, item, or custom bonus that increases that ability score. Negative values can also be entered for penalties.

How are saving throws calculated?

A saving throw equals the related ability modifier plus proficiency bonus when selected. The extra save bonus is also added when entered.

Why is passive perception included?

Passive perception is used often during exploration. It equals 10 plus the Wisdom modifier, unless other rules add bonuses.

Can I export the results?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet use. Use the PDF button for a printable summary of the calculated attributes.

Does this replace a character sheet?

No. It supports planning and checking numbers. You should still record class features, spells, equipment, attacks, and special rules separately.
