Formula Used

Normalize longitude: degree mod 360.

Angular distance: min(|A - B|, 360 - |A - B|).

Occupied span: 360 - largest empty gap between sorted positions.

Aspect match: |angular distance - aspect angle| ≤ selected orb.

Pattern rules: bundle uses a compact span. Bowl uses one half of the wheel. Bucket uses a bowl cluster plus one handle. Locomotive uses a large gap and a wide occupied span. Splash uses many signs with small gaps.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter each planet longitude as a decimal degree from 0 to 360.
  2. Keep the planets you want to include checked.
  3. Add optional house numbers for extra balance notes.
  4. Choose an aspect orb. Use smaller values for stricter results.
  5. Press Calculate Pattern. Read the result below the header.
  6. Use CSV or PDF buttons to save your report.

Moon48.002Helps measure gaps and aspects.
Mars158.005Can create aspect pressure.
Saturn246.008May define an opposite cluster.
Pluto342.0012Completes the wheel spread.

Understanding Birth Chart Pattern Analysis

A birth chart pattern is a visual distribution of planets. It shows how energy is gathered, spread, or divided. This calculator studies zodiac longitude. It gives a structured starting point.

The main test is the occupied span. The program sorts every selected planet by degree. It finds the largest empty gap around the wheel. The occupied span is three hundred sixty degrees minus that gap. A small span can suggest a bundle. A half wheel span can suggest a bowl. Wider spans may show locomotive, splash, splay, or mixed styles.

Aspect Pattern Checks

Aspect patterns add another layer. The tool compares every planet pair. It checks the angular distance against major aspect targets. These targets include conjunction, sextile, square, trine, quincunx, and opposition. Your chosen orb controls the allowed difference. A tight orb gives stricter results. A wider orb gives more possible links.

Balance Review

Element and mode balance are useful. Fire, earth, air, and water counts show the tone of the chart. Cardinal, fixed, and mutable counts show how action may move. Empty signs or strong clusters can explain why a pattern feels focused or scattered.

The result should be read as a guide. Astrology uses symbolism, birth time accuracy, and context. A chart with missing planets can produce a weak diagnosis. A chart with many optional points can change the pattern. Always review the entered degrees before using the report.

Better Entry Practice

For best results, enter planets from a trusted ephemeris. Use decimal degrees from zero to three hundred sixty. You may also enter house numbers for notes. Press calculate to see the pattern family, occupied span, largest gap, aspect list, and special structures.

Use exports for study notes. The CSV file is helpful for spreadsheets. The PDF file is useful for sharing. Keep the example table nearby when learning. It shows valid degree format and helps prevent entry mistakes.

Because chart patterns are broad summaries, do not force one label. Compare the confidence notes with the aspect structures. A strong bowl with a clear handle may feel like a bucket. A splash with several tight aspects may still behave with focus. Careful review gives better meaning. Use judgment, not automatic certainty.

FAQs

What is a birth chart pattern?

It is the overall distribution of planets around the zodiac wheel. It can show whether chart energy is compact, divided, balanced, or widely spread.

Which degrees should I enter?

Enter absolute zodiac longitude from 0 to 360 degrees. Aries begins at 0, Taurus at 30, Gemini at 60, and so on.

What does occupied span mean?

Occupied span is the part of the wheel containing the selected planets. The calculator subtracts the largest empty gap from 360 degrees.

What orb should I use?

Use 3 degrees for strict aspect patterns. Use 6 degrees for normal analysis. Use wider values only for broad exploratory checks.

Can I include Chiron and the North Node?

Yes. Keep them checked if you want them included. Uncheck them if you prefer a traditional planet-only pattern reading.

Why did I get a mixed pattern?

A mixed result appears when placements do not meet one clear rule. This often happens with transitional or uneven chart distributions.

Does this replace a full chart reading?

No. It gives a technical pattern estimate. Full interpretation should also consider signs, houses, rulerships, aspects, and birth time accuracy.

What do the export buttons do?

The CSV button saves table data for spreadsheets. The PDF button saves a simple report with pattern, span, aspects, and structures.
