Formula Used

Available volume = marked box volume + listed added ring or cover volume.

Conductor fill = sum of each conductor count multiplied by the volume allowance for that AWG size.

Clamp fill = one conductor allowance of the largest conductor when internal clamps are present.

Support fitting fill = support fitting count multiplied by the largest conductor allowance.

Device yoke fill = device yokes x 2 x allowance of the largest conductor connected to those devices.

Ground fill = one allowance for the largest equipment grounding conductor when any are present.

Total required fill = conductor fill + clamp fill + support fitting fill + device fill + ground fill.

Remaining volume = available volume - total required fill.

Why Box Fill Matters

Every conductor and fitting uses space. The code method converts those items into volume allowances. The allowance depends on conductor size. Larger conductors need more cubic inches. Devices, clamps, support fittings, and grounding conductors also affect the total. A box passes when available volume is equal to, or greater than, the required fill volume.

Good Input Practice

Use the volume stamped on the box whenever available. Add only the listed volume of extension rings, raised covers, or other approved additions. Count insulated conductors that enter and terminate, splice, or pass through the box. Do not count short pigtails that begin and end inside the same box. Count each yoke as two conductor allowances of the largest conductor connected to that device.

Where do I find box volume?

Look for the cubic-inch marking on the box, extension ring, or approved cover. Use listed volume markings first. If the product is not marked, confirm the allowed method from the adopted code and product information.

Do pigtails count in box fill?

Short pigtails that start and end inside the same box are usually not counted as separate conductors. Conductors entering from outside and terminating, splicing, or passing through the box are counted.

How are grounding conductors counted?

One or more equipment grounding conductors are commonly counted as one conductor volume allowance, based on the largest grounding conductor present. Always confirm the final rule with the adopted code edition.
