Understanding Nitrogen Formal Charge
Formal charge helps you inspect a Lewis structure. It shows how electrons are assigned to one atom. For nitrogen, the usual valence count is five. The number changes only when you choose another isotope model or special teaching convention. Most organic and general chemistry problems keep five.
Why Nitrogen Needs Care
Nitrogen can appear neutral, positive, or negative. Ammonia is neutral because nitrogen has three bonds and one lone pair. Ammonium is positive because nitrogen has four bonds and no lone pair. Amide ions can be negative because nitrogen has fewer shared electrons and extra lone-pair electrons. These patterns guide resonance, reactivity, and stability.
How The Calculator Interprets Bonds
Each single bond contributes two bonding electrons. A double bond contributes four. A triple bond contributes six. An aromatic bond is treated as bond order one and one half. That contributes three bonding electrons. The calculator divides the bonding electrons by two, because a formal charge assigns half of each bond to nitrogen.
