Horizontal run = (gable span ÷ 2) + rake overhang

Rise = horizontal run × pitch ÷ 12

One rake length = √(horizontal run² + rise²)

Pair rake per gable = one rake length × 2

Section rake total = pair rake per gable × gable count × trim layers

Base line total = (span + 2 × overhang) × gable count × trim layers

Final required length = total before waste × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)

Stock pieces = final required length ÷ stock material length, rounded up

The main length used for trim is the rake length. The rake is the sloped edge from eave to ridge. A gable has two rake edges. When a rake overhang is used, the horizontal run becomes wider. The rise also changes because pitch is applied over that run.
