Example Data Table

Player Type Minutes Points Rebounds Assists Estimated PER Range
Role Guard 28 12 3 5 11 to 15
Strong Starter 34 20 7 5 17 to 21
All-Star Creator 36 30 9 8 23 to 30+

Formula Used

This calculator uses a box score based PER style estimate. It starts with a weighted game score, converts that value to a per minute rate, then adjusts it for pace and league context.

Points = 2 × two point makes + 3 × three point makes + free throws made

Game Score Base = PTS + 0.4FGM − 0.7FGA − 0.4(FTA − FTM) + 0.7ORB + 0.3DRB + STL + 0.7AST + 0.7BLK − 0.4PF − TOV

Estimated PER = (Game Score Base ÷ Minutes) × (15 ÷ League Raw Value Per Minute) × (League Pace ÷ Team Pace)

The model also reports true shooting percentage, effective field goal percentage, usage rate, assist ratio, turnover ratio, and per 36 minute production.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the player name and total games measured.
  2. Add minutes, shooting numbers, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, and fouls.
  3. Enter team pace and league pace for a fair tempo adjustment.
  4. Add team attempts, team turnovers, and team minutes for usage rate.
  5. Press the calculate button to show the result above the form.

Article: Understanding Basketball PER

What PER Tries to Measure

Player Efficiency Rating is designed to summarize box score value into one number. It helps compare players who create points, rebound, pass, defend, and limit mistakes. A single number cannot explain every basketball skill. Yet it can give a fast view of production. This calculator uses a practical PER style model for quick analysis. It rewards useful events and subtracts inefficient events.

Why Pace Matters

Basketball teams do not play at the same speed. A fast team creates more possessions. More possessions usually create more box score chances. A player on a slow team may have fewer counting stats. The pace adjustment makes the result easier to compare. It scales the player score by league pace and team pace. This prevents raw totals from becoming misleading.

Why Minutes Matter

PER is mainly a rate statistic. It looks at production relative to playing time. A bench player can look strong in short minutes. A starter must keep value across a larger role. That is why this tool reports per minute value and per 36 numbers. Those extra metrics help explain the final rating.

Efficiency and Usage

Scoring volume is not enough. Efficient shooting improves the player profile. Missed shots and turnovers reduce the rating. True shooting includes free throws. Effective field goal percentage gives extra value to threes. Usage rate estimates how much offense the player used. High usage with strong efficiency often signals star level impact.

Reading the Result

A score near fifteen suggests average box score impact. Higher values suggest stronger production. Lower values suggest limited efficiency or low activity. Use the grade as a guide, not a final judgment. Defense, spacing, screening, leadership, and role difficulty also matter. The best evaluation combines film, context, and numbers.

FAQs

What does PER mean in basketball?

PER means Player Efficiency Rating. It estimates a player’s per minute box score impact using scoring, shooting, rebounds, assists, defensive stats, turnovers, fouls, pace, and league context.

Is this the exact official PER formula?

No. This is a practical PER style calculator. It uses weighted box score production, pace adjustment, and league normalization for useful player comparison.

What is a good PER score?

A value near 15 is usually treated as average. Scores above 20 suggest strong impact. Scores above 25 usually indicate elite box score production.

Why does pace affect the result?

Fast teams create more possessions and more stat chances. Pace adjustment helps compare players from fast and slow teams more fairly.

Why are turnovers subtracted?

Turnovers end possessions without a shot. They reduce offensive value, so this calculator subtracts them from the weighted base score.

Can I use totals from a full season?

Yes. Enter full season totals for minutes and box score stats. Also use matching team totals for the same period.

What is league raw value per minute?

It is the normalization baseline. The default value helps scale the rating around 15, which represents average performance in this model.

Does PER measure defense fully?

No. It includes steals, blocks, rebounds, and fouls. It does not fully measure positioning, communication, rim deterrence, or switch defense.
