Advanced Carry Capacity Calculator
Formula Used
Normal carrying capacity: Strength × 15 × size multiplier × custom multiplier
Push, drag, or lift: Strength × 30 × size multiplier × custom multiplier
Variant encumbrance: Encumbered starts at Strength × 5. Heavy encumbrance starts at Strength × 10. Maximum capacity is Strength × 15.
Coin weight: Total coins ÷ 50. This assumes fifty coins weigh one pound.
Total load: All entered gear, armor, weapons, supplies, treasure, coins, mount load, and custom item rows are added together.
How To Use This Calculator
Enter the character Strength score first. Select creature size next. Enable Powerful Build when a race or feature allows it. Add normal gear, armor, weapons, coins, supplies, and treasure. Use the custom item box for detailed inventory rows. Press Calculate. The result appears above the form and below the header. Use CSV for spreadsheet records. Use PDF for campaign notes.

Carry Capacity Planning For 5e Adventures
Why Load Matters
Inventory weight can change a journey. A strong hero may carry armor, weapons, rope, tools, food, water, and treasure. A weaker hero may reach a limit quickly. This calculator helps players see that limit before the table slows down.
Use It Before Travel
Long travel makes weight important. Rations add up. Water can become heavy. Coins may look small, but many coins create real weight. The tool adds these parts together. It then compares them with the selected carrying rule.
Normal Rule
The normal rule is simple. Multiply Strength by fifteen. That gives the safe carrying capacity for most Small or Medium creatures. Larger creatures carry more. Tiny creatures carry less. The calculator applies these size changes automatically.
Variant Encumbrance
Some tables use variant encumbrance. This rule creates two warning points. The first point is encumbered. The second point is heavily encumbered. These stages can reduce speed. They can also make travel feel more tactical.
Powerful Build
Some characters count as one size larger for carrying, pushing, dragging, and lifting. The Powerful Build option handles that case. It is useful for characters with special ancestry features. It is also helpful for homebrew species.
Coins And Treasure
Treasure weight is easy to forget. The calculator counts coin weight by using fifty coins per pound. It also includes a separate treasure field. This helps when the party carries gems, art objects, bars, relics, or loot sacks.
Custom Inventory Rows
The custom item box gives extra control. Add one item per line. Use the item name, weight, and quantity. The calculator multiplies weight by quantity. It then adds every custom row to the final load.
Better Table Decisions
Use the result as a planning aid. It can show when a mount is needed. It can show when a bag must be dropped. It can also help a group divide supplies fairly before a dangerous dungeon, chase, or wilderness route.
FAQs
What does this calculator measure?
It measures carrying capacity, total inventory load, coin weight, push limits, drag limits, lift limits, and encumbrance status for a 5e character or creature.
How is normal carrying capacity calculated?
Normal carrying capacity is Strength multiplied by fifteen. Size and selected custom multipliers can adjust that result for larger, smaller, or special creatures.
What does Powerful Build do?
Powerful Build treats the creature as one size larger for carrying, pushing, dragging, and lifting. The calculator increases the effective size multiplier.
How are coins counted?
The calculator adds all coin types together. It then divides the total by fifty because fifty coins are treated as one pound.
What is variant encumbrance?
Variant encumbrance adds stricter load stages. A character becomes encumbered above Strength times five and heavily encumbered above Strength times ten.
Can I add custom items?
Yes. Enter one item per line using this format: name, weight, quantity. The calculator totals all custom rows automatically.
Does size affect capacity?
Yes. Tiny creatures carry less. Large and bigger creatures carry more. Small and Medium creatures usually use the same base multiplier.
Can I download the results?
Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet data. Use the PDF button for a simple printable campaign report.
