Example Data Table

Scenario Catch Rate HP Status Ball Approx Result
Common target 255 20 / 100 Sleep Ultra Very high chance
Starter style target 45 25 / 100 Paralysis Great Moderate chance
Rare target 25 10 / 120 Sleep Timer Improves late
Legendary style target 3 1 / 150 Freeze Ultra Low chance

Formula Used

The calculator uses the Gen 3 style modified catch value:

a = (((3 × Max HP - 2 × Current HP) × Catch Rate × Ball Bonus) ÷ (3 × Max HP)) × Status Bonus

If a reaches 255, the throw is treated as certain. Otherwise, the shake threshold is:

b = 1048560 ÷ fourth-root(16711680 ÷ a)

One throw chance is estimated as (b ÷ 65536)4. Repeated attempt chance is 1 - (1 - one throw chance)attempts.

How To Use This Calculator

  1. Choose a preset or enter the exact species catch rate.
  2. Add maximum HP and current HP for the target.
  3. Select the ball, status condition, level, turns, and attempts.
  4. Check any conditional ball options that apply.
  5. Press Calculate to show results below the header.
  6. Use CSV or PDF buttons to save the current result.

About This Gen 3 Catch Tool

Gen 3 capture math can feel hidden during play. This calculator turns those checks into clear numbers. It uses health, catch rate, ball choice, status, and attempts. The result helps compare a throw now with another move first. It also shows modified value, shake chance, repeat chance, and expected throws.

Why Health Matters

Lower health improves the main catch value. The formula rewards careful damage more than guessing. A target at one health is much easier. The same target near full health is harder. This tool guards against invalid health entries. Current health cannot exceed maximum health. Very small health values are handled safely. You can test many health points quickly.

Ball And Status Choices

Ball multipliers change the final value before shake checks. Ultra, Timer, Repeat, Net, Dive, and Nest can differ greatly. Some balls need extra details. Timer uses turn count. Nest uses target level. Net checks water or bug targets. Dive checks the battle context. Status also matters. Sleep and freeze give the strongest normal bonus. Poison, burn, and paralysis give a smaller bonus. No status keeps the value unchanged.

Using The Output

The single throw chance estimates one ball. The attempt chance estimates repeated throws. Expected throws gives the average number needed. It is not a promise. Random results can arrive early or late. Shake lines show how far failed throws may go. They help explain suspense during capture attempts. Still, the catch chance is the main result.

Planning Better Captures

Use the example table to learn common patterns. Try a high catch rate target first. Then lower health and add status. Next compare several balls. This shows how each input changes the chance. For risky targets, increase attempts and review repeat chance. For rare targets, choose safer health and reliable status. Select the strongest valid ball. The calculator is built for planning and quick comparison. It keeps values visible, so decisions stay easy to audit.

Good Input Habits

Use the exact maximum health whenever possible. Estimate current health from the bar only when needed. Keep turn count realistic for Timer Ball tests. Check every conditional option before exporting. Small input changes can move the final percentage. Save results often.

FAQs

What is a Gen 3 catch calculator?

It estimates capture odds using health, catch rate, ball bonus, status bonus, and planned attempts from third generation style games.

What catch rate should I enter?

Enter the species catch rate from 1 to 255. Higher values are easier. Lower values are harder.

Why does current HP matter?

Lower current HP raises the modified catch value. A target near one health is usually much easier to capture.

Which status gives the best bonus?

Sleep and freeze give the strongest normal bonus. Paralysis, burn, and poison give a smaller bonus.

What does expected throws mean?

It is the average number of throws needed over many trials. It does not guarantee a catch by that throw.

When should I use Timer Ball?

Use it when many turns have passed. Its multiplier grows with turn count and reaches a cap.

Why are conditional options included?

Some balls only gain power in certain contexts. Net, Dive, Repeat, and Nest need extra details for better estimates.

Can I save my result?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet data. Use the PDF button for a simple printable report.
