A cement sand gravel ratio tells you how each dry ingredient shares the batch. The common 1:2:4 mix means one part cement, two parts sand, and four parts gravel. The ratio is measured by volume, not by weight. This calculator starts with your required wet concrete volume. It then converts that volume into dry material demand by using a dry volume factor.
Why The Dry Volume Factor Matters
Concrete shrinks into voids when cement paste fills spaces between sand and gravel. Site batching also includes spillage, bulking, and uneven compaction. Because of this, dry material volume is higher than finished concrete volume. A factor near 1.54 is often used for nominal estimates. You can change it when local mix data, trial batches, or engineering notes suggest another value.
Choosing A Mix Ratio
Lean mixes use more aggregate and less cement. They may suit blinding layers, footings, or nonstructural work. Rich mixes use more cement. They may suit slabs, columns, beams, or repairs where strength and finish matter. Always follow drawings and local codes for structural concrete. Using Wastage And Moisture Inputs
Wastage helps cover handling loss and measuring variation. A small percentage can prevent shortages during placement. Moisture inputs help adjust the water estimate. Wet sand and gravel already contain water. The calculator subtracts estimated aggregate water from the target mixing water. This gives a more realistic added water value.
Reading The Result
The result shows cement volume, cement weight, cement bags, sand volume, gravel volume, dry batch volume, and estimated water. It also shows optional material costs when prices are entered. These figures are planning estimates. Field conditions can change yield. Measure ingredients carefully. Keep the water cement ratio controlled. Excess water makes concrete easier to place, but it can reduce strength, increase shrinkage, and weaken surface durability.
