Formula Used

The calculator uses relative luminance and contrast ratio. Each red, green, and blue channel is converted from sRGB to linear light.

Linear channel: If channel value is 0.04045 or lower, divide it by 12.92. Otherwise use ((value + 0.055) / 1.055) raised to 2.4.

Relative luminance: L = 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B.

Contrast ratio: (lighter luminance + 0.05) / (darker luminance + 0.05).

When opacity is below 100%, the foreground is blended over the background first. The effective foreground is then used in the ratio.

About Color Contrast Ratio

A color contrast ratio compares two visible colors. It measures how much brighter one color appears than the other. Designers use it for text, icons, buttons, and charts.
