Advanced hydraulic tool. Compute critical shear stress. Optimize open channel flow designs easily now.
Critical discharge shear stress represents a fundamental hydraulic threshold utilized in open channel design, sediment transport analysis, and river restoration engineering. When flowing water exerts a tractive force on the channel bed that exceeds this critical limit, sediment particles begin to detach and move downstream, triggering potential erosion or bedload migration.
The calculation integrates traditional open-channel flow dynamics with the Shields criterion for incipient sediment motion. The primary baseline equation is expressed as:
$$\tau_c = \theta_{cr} (\rho_s - \rho) g d_{50} \times SF$$
Where $\tau_c$ is the critical shear stress, $\theta_{cr}$ is the critical Shields parameter, $\rho_s$ and $\rho$ denote sediment and fluid densities respectively, $g$ is acceleration due to gravity, $d_{50}$ is the median particle size, and $SF$ represents the applied engineering safety factor. Alternatively, boundary shear stress can be verified using the uniform flow formula $\tau = \gamma R S$.
