Mixed low threat 5 5 2 × CR 2, 1 × CR 3 1,750 350
Standard fight 4 4 1 × CR 4 1,200 300
Harder battle 6 4 1 × CR 8 3,600 900
Small creature group 3 4 6 × CR 1/2 900 225

Formula Used

This calculator uses a table based method. First, it checks the character level or ECL. Then it matches that level against each monster CR. The matching value is the base XP for one defeated monster. For fractional CR creatures, the calculator uses the CR 1 award and multiplies it by the fraction.

The main formula is: Character Combat XP = Sum(Base XP × Quantity) ÷ Party Size. Final XP uses: (Combat XP + Story XP + Trap XP + Custom XP - XP Cost) × Multiplier. Level threshold uses: Total XP for Level N = 500 × N × (N - 1).

Some extreme CR and level pairs are outside normal table use. The calculator warns when a line has no standard award.

DND 3.5 XP Planning Guide

Why XP Planning Matters

Experience rewards shape the pace of a campaign. A small award can make travel feel slow. A large award can push heroes ahead too soon. Good planning keeps growth steady. It also helps the table understand why a battle mattered. This is useful in long campaigns.

Use Character Level Carefully

In this rules style, the award depends on the character level. A lower level hero may earn a larger reward from the same monster. A higher level hero may earn less. This creates a catch up effect. It keeps mixed level groups closer over time.

Think Beyond Combat

Many adventures include traps, puzzles, roleplay, rescue scenes, and smart avoidance. These moments can deserve awards too. The custom fields help you include them. Use clear notes when you export results. Players like records they can trust.

Balance Party Size

Party size changes the share. Four heroes gain more than six heroes from the same base amount. A small party also faces more risk. Review the final number before you confirm it. The multiplier field helps with special cases.

Keep a Session Log

A clean log prevents disputes. Save the monster list, CR values, and final award. Add any story bonus or XP cost. This is helpful for crafting, missed sessions, and replacement characters. It also makes future encounter design easier.

FAQs

What does this DND 3.5 XP calculator do?

It estimates encounter rewards, splits combat XP by party size, adds bonus awards, subtracts costs, and tracks level progress after the session.

Can I use fractional Challenge Ratings?

Yes. The CR menu includes common fractional values such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8, and 1/10.

Does party size affect the final XP?

Yes. The calculator divides the monster base XP sum by the number of characters sharing the encounter reward.

Can I add story awards?

Yes. Enter story XP, trap XP, or custom bonus XP per character. These values are added after the combat share is calculated.

Can I subtract crafting or spell XP costs?

Yes. Add the cost in the XP penalty field. The calculator subtracts it before applying the chosen multiplier and rounding rule.

Why do some CR lines show no award?

Some monster and level combinations fall outside normal table support. The calculator keeps the line visible and warns you.

What does the multiplier do?

It adjusts the final award. Use it for house rules, partial success, special event bonuses, reduced rewards, or accelerated campaign pacing.

Can I export the result?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet records. Use the PDF button for a printable session note.
