Formula Used

Constitution modifier: floor((Constitution score - 10) / 2)

Level one hit points: full hit die + Constitution modifier + per level bonuses.

Later level hit points: selected die gain + Constitution modifier + per level bonuses.

Fixed average gains: d6 = 4, d8 = 5, d10 = 6, and d12 = 7.

Maximum hit points: level one gain + all later gains + flat bonuses.

Damage handling: damage removes temporary hit points first. Remaining damage lowers current hit points.

Healing handling: healing restores current hit points. It cannot exceed maximum hit points.

Short rest estimate: hit dice spent × average die roll + Constitution modifier + rest bonus.

Why Hit Points Matter

Hit points guide many choices in a campaign. They affect risk, pacing, healing, and encounter confidence. A strong character sheet needs more than a single maximum value. Players often need to compare current health, temporary protection, short rest recovery, and future level growth.

Level Gains And Constitution

Each class uses a hit die. The die sets the base gain at first level. Later levels can use a roll, a fixed average, a maximum value, or a custom table rule. Constitution changes the result at every level. That makes one ability score increase very important for durable characters.

Bonuses And Durable Builds

Some builds gain extra health from feats, ancestry traits, items, or house rules. The Tough feat is a common example. It adds health at every level. Small bonuses can become large over a long campaign. This calculator separates per level bonuses from flat bonuses. That makes the result easier to audit.

Combat And Recovery

Combat health is not only maximum health. Temporary hit points can absorb damage before current hit points fall. Healing can restore current health, but it cannot raise a character above the maximum. Short rests also matter. Spending hit dice can help a party continue without using every spell slot.
