ERAS Residency Fee Planning
Residency applications can become expensive quickly. A clear estimate helps you choose a balanced program list. This calculator separates each specialty because the fee tier starts again for every specialty. That detail matters when you dual apply. Thirty programs in one specialty and thirty in another are treated as separate groups.
Formula used
The base application fee is calculated in tiers. Programs up to the first tier limit use the lower rate. Programs above that limit use the higher rate. The formula is: base fee equals lower tier programs multiplied by lower rate, plus extra programs multiplied by extra rate. Specialty totals are added together. Then selected transcript fees, token fees, and other custom costs are added. Credits or waivers are subtracted. Tax is applied only after the discount step.
How to use this calculator
Enter each specialty name and the number of programs you plan to apply to. Use the default rates, or edit them if your season uses different values. Select transcript options when they apply. Add a token fee or another planning cost when needed. Enter any fee assistance credit as a dollar amount. Add tax only when you want to model a billing estimate. Press calculate to see the total above the form. Use the export buttons to save your estimate.
Why this estimate helps
A strong application list should be realistic. It should also fit your budget. This tool shows the cost impact of adding more programs past the lower tier. The higher tier can raise the total fast. You can test several versions of your list before payment. You can compare a focused list with a broader list. You can also see whether dual applying changes your budget in a major way.
Planning tips
Keep the exported file with your application notes. Update it when you add programs. Review official portal totals before paying. This calculator is for planning only. Actual charges can depend on the active season, portal rules, taxes, and selected services. Save a separate estimate for each scenario. Share the summary with advisors, mentors, or family supporters. Small changes can protect cash flow during interview season. Always confirm the final amount during checkout before final online submission.
FAQs
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates residency application costs by specialty, program count, transcript options, extra fees, credits, and tax. It is a planning tool, not an official payment screen.
Why are specialties entered separately?
Application fee tiers reset for each specialty. Separate entries help dual applicants estimate costs more accurately across different program groups.
Can I change the fee rates?
Yes. The tier limit, lower rate, and extra program rate are editable. This helps you update the calculator when a future season changes.
Does this include transcript fees?
Yes. You can include or exclude USMLE and COMLEX-USA transcript fees. You can also edit the amounts if your season uses different values.
What is the credit field for?
Use it for fee assistance, a waiver, or any manual discount. The calculator subtracts it before applying the tax percentage.
Can I add tax?
Yes. Enter a tax percentage when you want a billing estimate. Leave it at zero if tax does not apply to your planning case.
How do CSV and PDF downloads work?
After calculation, download buttons appear above the form. CSV is useful for spreadsheets. PDF is useful for saving or sharing a simple estimate.
Is this an official ERAS bill?
No. It is only an estimate. Always confirm your final total in the official application portal before submitting payment.
