Formula Used

Gross income equals earned income plus unearned income.

Adjusted income equals gross income minus earned income deduction, standard deduction, care costs, child support, and allowed medical costs.

Excess shelter deduction equals shelter costs minus one half of adjusted income. The regular shelter cap used here is $744.

Net income equals adjusted income minus the allowed shelter deduction.

Estimated benefit equals maximum allotment minus thirty percent of net income, rounded up.

About the West Virginia Food Stamp Estimate

This calculator gives a planning estimate for food assistance in West Virginia. It follows common SNAP calculation steps. It is useful before an application. It is also helpful when income changes. The result is not a final agency decision.

Why Income Matters

SNAP starts with household size and monthly income. Earned income usually receives a deduction. Unearned income is counted too. Examples include unemployment, Social Security, or other steady payments. The calculator adds both income types. Then it compares the total with a selected gross limit.

How Deductions Help

Deductions can reduce countable income. The tool includes the standard deduction. It also includes dependent care, child support paid, and medical costs. Medical costs only help when the household has an elderly or disabled member. This detail can change the final estimate.

Shelter and Utility Costs

Shelter costs are important. Rent, mortgage, taxes, insurance, and utilities may reduce net income. The calculator finds excess shelter costs after other deductions. For many households, the shelter deduction is capped. For households with an elderly or disabled member, the cap is not used.

Benefit Estimate

After net income is found, the calculator estimates the monthly allotment. SNAP expects many households to use part of their own income for food. So the tool subtracts thirty percent of net income from the maximum benefit. Very small one or two person benefits may use a minimum amount.

Important Limits

Some households must also meet asset rules. West Virginia says many households are not subject to the asset limit. Still, this tool includes an asset test option. Use it when the rule applies to your case. Keep records for rent, income, identity, expenses, and household members.

Best Use

Use this page as a screening guide. Try several income and expense scenarios. Save the result for discussion. Then apply through official West Virginia channels. A caseworker may request proof. Final eligibility can depend on immigration rules, student rules, work rules, sanctions, and special household details.

FAQs

Is this calculator an official West Virginia decision?

No. It is only an estimate. The state agency reviews your application, documents, household facts, income, and expenses before making a final decision.

What income should I enter?

Enter monthly earned income from work. Also enter monthly unearned income, such as benefits, support, or other regular payments.

Why does the calculator ask about elderly or disabled members?

Those households may receive special treatment. They may have different gross test rules, a higher asset limit, medical deductions, and uncapped shelter deductions.

Should I use actual utilities or a utility allowance?

Use the amount that best fits your screening method. Official cases may use state utility standards, not every actual bill.

Can shelter costs increase my estimate?

Yes. Rent, mortgage, taxes, insurance, and utilities may reduce net income. Lower net income can raise the estimated benefit.

Why is my estimate zero?

Your income, net income, assets, or selected limits may be too high. Review each field for mistakes before deciding.

Does the PDF button need an extra library?

No. This page creates a simple PDF directly. It is basic, but it saves the main estimate clearly.

Where should I apply?

Apply through official West Virginia benefit channels. Bring proof of identity, income, residence, expenses, and household members when requested.
