Formula Used
The calculator first converts quilt width and length into inches. It then finds the quilt perimeter. The perimeter formula is:
Perimeter = 2 × (quilt width + quilt length)
Next, the calculator adds tail allowance and corner allowance. It then applies the safety overage. The binding length formula is:
Binding length = (perimeter + tail allowance + corner allowance total) × (1 + overage percent ÷ 100)
For straight grain binding, strip count is based on usable fabric width. Join loss is removed for every join. Yardage is estimated from the number of strips multiplied by strip width.
Yardage = strip count × strip width ÷ 36
For bias binding, fabric use is estimated from strip area and adjusted by the bias yield percent.

What This Tool Estimates

Why Strip Count Matters
