Calculator Inputs
Enter prior GPA details for cumulative planning. Add current or planned courses below.
Example Data Table
This sample shows how units and grade points create quality points.
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MATH 021 | 4 | A- | 3.7 | 14.8 |
| WRI 010 | 4 | B+ | 3.3 | 13.2 |
| CHEM 002 | 4 | B | 3.0 | 12.0 |
| CSE 020 | 3 | A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
Formula Used
Course quality points = Course units × grade point value
Term GPA = Total term quality points ÷ total term graded units
Cumulative GPA = Prior quality points + term quality points, divided by prior graded units + term graded units
Needed future GPA = Required future quality points ÷ future graded units
Non-GPA grades are displayed but excluded from quality points and graded units.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter prior GPA and prior graded units if you need a cumulative estimate.
- Leave prior values at zero for a current term calculation only.
- Add each course name, unit value, and expected grade.
- Select excluded grades for courses that should not affect GPA.

GPA Planning Guide
Why GPA Planning Matters
A GPA calculator is more than a quick number tool. It helps students make informed academic choices before grades become final. At UC Merced, each graded course contributes units and grade points. A strong plan shows how one class can move a term average, a cumulative average, and a target goal. This page keeps the process simple while still giving detailed outputs.
Understanding the Inputs
Start with your prior GPA and prior graded units when you want a cumulative estimate. Leave those fields at zero when you only need a term GPA. Then enter each current course, its unit value, and the expected letter grade. Courses with P, S, NP, U, I, IP, W, or NR are tracked as entered courses, but they do not add grade points or graded units. This matches common academic planning practice for non GPA grades.
Reading the Results
After submission, the result panel appears above the form. It shows term GPA, cumulative GPA, graded units, total entered units, and quality points. The chart helps you see which classes carry the largest GPA weight. A four unit class with the same grade affects the average more than a one unit class. This makes unit values important when planning effort and study time.
Using the Target Planner
The target planner compares your current projected cumulative GPA with a goal. Enter a target GPA and the number of future graded units you expect to complete. The calculator estimates the future average needed to reach that target. If the needed GPA is above 4.0, the target may require more units, higher grades now, or a revised timeline. If the needed GPA is below zero, your current projection already clears the goal.
Smart Academic Use
Use this calculator as a planning guide, not an official transcript. Always check official records and advisor guidance before making enrollment decisions. Try several scenarios. Change one course grade, adjust future units, or compare a term only calculation with a cumulative calculation. These small tests can reveal realistic goals and better next steps. Save the CSV or PDF output for personal records and planning discussions with an advisor later.
FAQs
1. Does this calculator use a 4.0 scale?
Yes. It uses a 4.0 planning scale where A+ and A both equal 4.0. Lower letter grades follow standard grade point values.
2. Are P and NP grades included?
No. P, S, NP, U, I, IP, W, and NR are displayed as entered, but they are excluded from GPA units and quality points.
3. What are quality points?
Quality points are the grade point value multiplied by course units. A four unit A course gives 16 quality points.
4. Can I calculate only one semester?
Yes. Leave prior GPA and prior graded units at zero. The calculator will show the GPA for the entered course list.
5. How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Enter your prior cumulative GPA and prior graded units. Then add current courses. The tool combines prior and new quality points.
6. Why is my target GPA impossible?
If the needed future GPA is above 4.0, the selected target cannot be reached within the future units entered.
7. Is this an official GPA report?
No. It is a planning calculator. Always confirm final GPA, repeated course rules, and academic standing with official records.
8. Can I export my results?
Yes. After calculation, use the CSV or PDF buttons above the form to save your summary and course details.
