Formula Used

Grade points come from the selected plus and minus scale. Weighted points equal grade points plus any course bonus, limited by the selected cap.

Quality points = credits × weighted grade points.

Term GPA = total quality points ÷ total counted credits.

Combined GPA = prior quality points plus term quality points, divided by combined credits.

Needed future GPA = required future quality points ÷ future planned credits.

How to Use This Calculator

Choose the grading scale used by your school. Enter each course name, grade, credit value, and any weight bonus.

Use the custom point override only when your school publishes a different value. Check the exclude box for pass, audit, withdrawal, or transfer rows.

Add your current GPA and completed credits when you want a new cumulative GPA. Enter a target GPA and future credits to estimate the required future average.

GPA Planning Guide

Why Plus and Minus Grades Matter

GPA planning is easier when every plus and minus grade is visible. A small grade sign can change quality points, scholarship standing, and graduation decisions. This calculator keeps those details in one place. It accepts letter grades, credit hours, course weights, repeated courses, and prior cumulative records.

Plus and minus systems convert each letter into grade points. For example, B+ usually earns more than B, while B- earns less. The tool multiplies the selected point value by course credits. Then it adds quality points across all counted courses. The result is divided by counted credits.

Weighted Courses and Repeats

Many schools also use weighted grades for honors, advanced, or difficult courses. The weight bonus field lets you add controlled extra points. A cap protects the final course value from rising beyond your selected limit. This helps you compare regular GPA, weighted GPA, and combined GPA without manual spreadsheets.

Repeated courses can be handled in different ways. Some schools count every attempt. Others count only the latest attempt. Enter the same course code or name, then choose the policy that fits your transcript rule. You can also exclude audits, pass courses, withdrawals, or transfer classes by using the exclude option.

Targets and Exports

The calculator also supports a prior record. Enter your current cumulative GPA and completed credits. The term result will merge with that record and show a new cumulative GPA. If you enter a target GPA, the tool estimates the average GPA needed on future credits. That number can guide course planning before registration.

Exports make review simple. The CSV file is useful for spreadsheets. The PDF file is useful for advising meetings or personal records. Both include course rows and summary totals, so you can document assumptions clearly.

For best results, enter credits exactly as listed by your school. Select the grading scale that matches your catalog. Use custom overrides only when your institution publishes a different point table. Review excluded courses before exporting. A clean input table gives the clearest GPA answer.

Because policies vary, treat each result as an estimate. Confirm final transcript rules with your registrar or academic adviser. Still, a detailed calculator can reveal patterns early, show credit risk, and support better choices during a busy semester and graduation planning goals.

FAQs

What is a plus and minus GPA scale?

It is a grade point system where A-, B+, B-, and similar grades receive separate values. This makes GPA results more precise than a simple letter scale.

Does A+ equal 4.0 or 4.3?

That depends on the school. Use the 4.0 scale when A+ is capped. Use the 4.3 scale when your catalog awards extra value for A+.

How are credits used?

Credits weight each course. A four credit course affects GPA more than a one credit course because it contributes more quality points.

Can I calculate weighted GPA?

Yes. Add a weight bonus for honors or advanced courses. The calculator adds the bonus, then applies the selected point cap.

How should repeated courses be entered?

Enter repeated courses with the same course name or code. Choose latest only when your school replaces older attempts with the newest attempt.

Should pass or withdrawal courses be included?

Usually they are not counted in GPA. Select P, NP, W, I, or audit grades, or use the exclude option when needed.

What does the target GPA field do?

It estimates the average GPA needed on future credits to reach your target cumulative GPA after the planned future work.

Can I export my results?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet review. Use the PDF button for a simple report you can save or share.
