Birth Date Birth Time Offset Target Year Expected Output
1995-08-15 10:30 5.5 2026 Nakshatra, pada, rashi, tithi, yearly star windows
2001-02-04 22:10 5.0 2026 Closest star birthday window near civil birthday
1988-11-27 06:45 -5.0 2026 Exact Moon return and exportable report

Formula Used

The calculator estimates the tropical Moon longitude, then subtracts the selected ayanamsa to get sidereal longitude.

Sidereal Moon = Tropical Moon Longitude - Ayanamsa

Nakshatra Number = floor(Sidereal Moon / 13°20′) + 1

Pada Number = floor(Position inside Nakshatra / 3°20′) + 1

Tithi = floor((Sidereal Moon - Sidereal Sun) / 12°) + 1

The yearly star birthday is found by scanning the target year. The script records every interval where the Moon occupies the birth nakshatra. It also searches for the closest exact return to the original birth Moon longitude.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the birth date and exact recorded birth time.
  2. Set the time-zone offset for the recorded birth location.
  3. Choose a target year for the star birthday report.
  4. Select an ayanamsa model used by your preferred tradition.

Understanding Hindu Star Birthdays

A Hindu star birthday is based on the Moon’s place in a nakshatra at birth. It may fall on a different civil date each year. Families use it for blessings, temple visits, gifts, and quiet reflection. This calculator estimates that observance by finding when the Moon returns to the same star in the selected year.

Why the Date Changes

The civil birthday follows the Sun and calendar. The star birthday follows the Moon. The Moon moves through twenty seven nakshatras in about a sidereal month. Each star covers thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of the zodiac. Because lunar motion is faster than the calendar date, the matching star often comes earlier or later than the printed birthday.

What the Calculator Checks

The tool first converts the birth time into universal time. It then estimates the Moon’s tropical longitude. An ayanamsa value converts that longitude into the sidereal zodiac. The sidereal Moon gives the birth nakshatra, pada, and rashi. After that, the selected year is scanned for every period when the Moon occupies the same nakshatra. The closest period near the civil birthday is marked as the suggested observance window.

Using the Results Carefully

The output is designed for planning. It gives entry time, exit time, duration, tithi estimate, and an exact moon-return time. For rituals, local sunrise rules and regional panchangam methods may change the final observance date. Some traditions observe when the star is present at sunrise. Others use the strongest part of the star window. Use the export buttons to save calculations, compare family members, or share a simple report.

Practical Tips

Enter the birth time as accurately as possible. Select the correct time-zone offset for the birthplace or recorded birth time. Check the target year before calculating. Review all matching windows if the nearest one feels unexpected. The Moon’s position is estimated, so a traditional panchangam can be used for final religious confirmation.

The method also helps when families live in different countries. A time-zone change can move the local date. That is why the calculator shows both the star window and the exact return. Clear timing makes discussion easier for everyone involved.

FAQs

What is a Hindu star birthday?

It is a birthday observed by the Moon’s nakshatra rather than only the civil calendar date. The birth star is found from the Moon’s sidereal longitude at birth.

Why does the star birthday change every year?

The Moon cycles through nakshatras faster than the solar calendar. Because of that movement, the same birth star may occur before or after the civil birthday.

Is the result suitable for rituals?

The result is useful for planning. For formal rituals, confirm with a local panchangam, priest, or family tradition because sunrise rules can change observance dates.

What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of twenty seven lunar mansions in the sidereal zodiac. Each nakshatra spans thirteen degrees and twenty minutes.

What is pada?

Pada means one quarter of a nakshatra. Each nakshatra has four padas. It helps identify naming syllables and more detailed lunar placement.

Which ayanamsa should I choose?

Lahiri is widely used. Raman and Krishnamurti are also common in different practices. Choose the one followed by your family or astrologer.

Does this calculator need latitude and longitude?

This version uses birth date, time, and time-zone offset. It does not calculate sunrise-based local observance rules from geographic coordinates.

Why is exact birth time important?

The Moon can move enough to change pada, tithi progress, or boundary timing. Accurate time gives a stronger nakshatra birthday estimate.
