About This IDPA Power Factor Calculator
This calculator helps match shooters review ammunition power factor before a chronograph check. It accepts bullet weight, measured speed, division rules, safety buffer, and optional correction values. The result shows the calculated factor, official rounded factor, required velocity, remaining margin, and conservative margin. It also prepares export records for later load notes.
Why Power Factor Matters
Power factor is a simple momentum style number. It does not replace safe loading data. It also does not prove accuracy or reliability. It only compares bullet weight and velocity against a selected division floor. A small margin can fail when another chronograph, warm barrel, cold weather, or bullet weight variation changes the measured value. For that reason, the form includes tolerance fields. They help you study a careful cushion without creating a load recipe.
Formula Used
The main formula is power factor equals bullet weight in grains multiplied by velocity in feet per second, then divided by 1000. Official scoring ignores digits after the decimal. A 124 grain bullet at 1020 fps gives 126.48 raw factor, so the official value is 126. The minimum required speed equals the selected division floor multiplied by 1000, then divided by bullet weight.
How To Use This Calculator
Choose the division first. Enter the actual bullet weight from your component label or scale. Add either one average velocity or a list of chronograph shots. When shot values are entered, the calculator uses their average and reports the spread. Add any expected velocity adjustment only when you have a reason. Enter a chronograph error or bullet tolerance to see a conservative check. Press calculate. Review pass status, margin, minimum fps, and target fps with your selected buffer. Reading The Result
A passing value means the entered data meets the selected floor. It is not a safety approval. A conservative pass means the load still passes after the selected tolerance settings. A fail means the entered data is below the floor. Increase only by following published, lawful, and safe ammunition guidance from trusted sources. Save the report with notes, date, firearm, and lot reference after testing.
