Formula Used

Required fill volume = sum of all counted items multiplied by their conductor volume allowance.

Insulated conductor fill = conductor count × allowance for that AWG size.

Device fill = device yokes × 2 × largest connected conductor allowance.

Clamp fill = clamp allowance count × selected conductor allowance.

Support fitting fill = support fitting count × selected conductor allowance.

Grounding fill, newer method = one allowance for up to four grounding conductors, plus one quarter allowance for each grounding conductor above four.

Remaining volume = available box volume − required fill volume.

Fill percentage = required fill volume ÷ available volume × 100.

Use the printed box volume when it is available. Add the listed volume of extension rings or raised covers. Enter each insulated conductor that enters the box and is spliced, terminated, or passes through. Do not count short pigtails that stay entirely inside the box. Select the largest grounding conductor size. Add devices by yoke or strap, not by outlet openings.

What is junction box wire fill?

It is the volume used by conductors, devices, clamps, support fittings, and grounding conductors inside a box. The required fill must not exceed the available box volume.

Do pigtails count in box fill?

Short pigtails do not count when no part of the conductor leaves the box. Conductors entering the box from outside normally count.

How are device yokes counted?

Each device yoke or strap usually counts as two conductor allowances. Use the largest conductor connected to that device for the allowance size.

Do grounding conductors count?

Yes. Grounding conductors have a separate allowance. Newer rules count the first four as one allowance, then add one quarter allowance for each extra grounding conductor.

What volume should I enter?
