Formula Used
This calculator uses an approximate mean lunar node method. First, the local birth date and time are converted to UTC. Then the Julian Day is calculated.
The mean tropical Rahu longitude is estimated with:
Rahu = 125.044555 - 0.0529537628 × D.
Here, D means days from J2000.0.
The sidereal Rahu position is calculated by subtracting ayanamsa.
Ketu is placed exactly opposite Rahu.
The formula is Ketu = Rahu + 180°.
The result is normalized inside a 0° to 360° circle.
Nakshatra is found by dividing the zodiac into 27 equal parts. Each nakshatra has 13°20′. Pada is found by dividing each nakshatra into four parts. Whole sign houses are estimated from the sidereal ascendant.

Understanding Rahu and Ketu Calculations
What Rahu and Ketu Mean
Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes. They are not physical planets. They are points where the Moon path crosses the Sun path. Rahu is the ascending node. Ketu is the descending node. In many astrology systems, they show karmic direction. They also show growth themes and release themes.
Why Birth Details Matter
Birth time changes the calculated sky position. Timezone also matters. A wrong offset can shift the chart. Location is important for house placement. Latitude and longitude help estimate the ascendant. The ascendant then gives whole sign houses. This makes the result more useful.
Sidereal Method
This tool uses a sidereal zodiac. It starts from a tropical node value. Then it subtracts ayanamsa. Ayanamsa is the difference between tropical and sidereal zodiacs. Different traditions use different values. That is why several systems are included. A custom option is also available.
Nakshatra and Pada
Nakshatra gives a finer placement. It divides the zodiac into 27 lunar mansions. Pada gives even more detail. Each nakshatra has four padas. This calculator reports both values. It also shows the star ruler. A simple dasha balance estimate is included.
Practical Use
Use the result for study and comparison. Save the report when testing several charts. CSV helps with spreadsheet work. PDF helps with sharing and records. The calculation is educational. Professional astrologers may use deeper ephemeris data. Still, this tool gives a clean starting point. It is fast, organized, and easy to reuse.
FAQs
1. What does this calculator find?
It estimates Rahu and Ketu positions. It also shows signs, degrees, nakshatra, pada, star ruler, and whole sign house placement.
2. Are Rahu and Ketu real planets?
No. They are mathematical lunar nodes. They mark where the Moon orbit crosses the apparent Sun path.
3. Why is Ketu always opposite Rahu?
Rahu is the ascending node. Ketu is the descending node. These points sit opposite each other on the zodiac circle.
4. Which ayanamsa should I choose?
Lahiri is a common default for sidereal charts. You can choose another system if your tradition or teacher recommends it.
5. Does birth location affect Rahu and Ketu?
The node longitude mainly depends on time. Location affects the ascendant and house estimate, so latitude and longitude are useful.
6. Is the calculation exact?
It uses an approximate mean lunar node formula. It is suitable for study, but detailed chart work may need professional ephemeris software.
7. What is nakshatra pada?
Pada is one quarter of a nakshatra. It gives a more detailed placement inside the lunar mansion.
8. Can I save the result?
Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet data. Use the PDF button for a simple printable report.
