Understanding Soap Lye Planning
A lye calculator helps makers turn a recipe idea into measurable soap values. It does not replace safe practice. It gives a working estimate before mixing oils and alkali. Good numbers matter because each oil needs a different alkali amount. Olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, and castor oil all use different sap values. The calculator multiplies each oil weight by its sap value. Then it reduces that amount by the selected superfat. This leaves extra oil in the finished bar.
Why Superfat Matters
Superfat is the planned oil surplus after saponification. A low value can make a very cleansing bar. A higher value can feel milder. Many handmade soap recipes use five percent as a starting point. Hard working laundry bars may use less. Gentle body bars may use more. The right value depends on the oils, purpose, and cure.
Water and Lye Strength
Water controls the concentration of the lye solution. More water gives a thinner batter and more time to work. Less water can speed trace and shorten drying time. The calculator offers water ratio and lye concentration methods. Use one method at a time. Beginners often prefer a water to lye ratio near two to one. Advanced makers may choose concentration for tighter control.
Oil Balance
The recipe table shows each oil percent. This helps balance cleansing, hardness, lather, and conditioning. Coconut oil can raise cleansing and bubbles. Olive oil can improve mildness. Palm and tallow can add firmness. Castor oil can support lather. But every formula needs testing. Small trial batches are safer than large experiments.
Safety Notes
Always add lye to water. Never add water to dry lye. Wear gloves, sleeves, and eye protection. Work with ventilation. Keep vinegar myths away from the mixing area. Clean spills with plenty of water. Label containers clearly. Keep children and pets away.
Using the Results
Use the lye amount, water amount, and total batch weight as a planning guide. Check the formula again before making soap. Measure with a reliable scale. Record every batch. Good notes help you improve texture, cure, scent, and bar performance over time.
Review every change slowly. A small adjustment can affect feel, cure, and usable shelf life later.
