Formula Used

Legal limit = elective deferral limit + allowed catch-up.

Target contribution = lower of selected target, legal limit, and salary.

Remaining needed = target contribution - YTD deferrals - planned bonus deferral.

Required per paycheck = remaining needed / remaining paychecks.

Required paycheck percent = required per paycheck / gross paycheck × 100.

Employer match = matchable employee contribution × match percent, limited by match cap and vesting.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your age, salary, pay schedule, and remaining checks. Add your current year-to-date employee deferrals. Include any planned bonus deferral if payroll allows it. Keep the default annual limits, or edit them when your plan year uses another value. Add employer match rules, vesting, and balance details. Press calculate. Max Out 401k Contribution Planning Guide

Why This Calculator Helps

A 401k max out plan needs clear payroll math. Many workers know the annual limit. They still miss the target because each paycheck is too low. This calculator turns the yearly goal into a paycheck amount. It also shows the percent of gross pay needed. That makes payroll updates easier.

Annual Limit And Catch-Up Room

The tool checks your age first. Younger savers use the regular elective deferral limit. Workers age 50 or older may use catch-up space. Workers age 60 to 63 may have a higher catch-up amount. You can edit the limits if your plan changes or your year differs.

Paycheck Target Method

The calculator subtracts your year-to-date deferrals and bonus deferrals from your target. Then it divides the gap by the remaining paychecks. This gives a simple payroll instruction. It also compares that target with your current deferral setting. A positive gap means you may fall short. A surplus means your current setting may exceed the target.

Employer Match Estimate

Employer match rules vary by plan. Some plans match dollar for dollar. Some match only a share of employee pay. This calculator uses match percent, salary cap, annual cap, and vesting. It estimates the vested match amount. This helps you see the possible total annual addition.

Balance Projection

The year-end balance estimate uses your current balance, remaining contributions, match estimate, and expected return. It is only a planning estimate. Market returns change often. Payroll timing can also change the final number.

Planning Tips

Check your payroll portal after each change. Watch bonus checks carefully. Some employers limit bonus deferrals. Also confirm that increasing your rate will not stop your match early. A steady paycheck target often works better than a rushed final-month change.

FAQs

What does maxing out a 401k mean?

It means contributing up to the allowed employee elective deferral limit for the year. Catch-up contributions may increase that limit for older workers.

Does employer match count toward my employee limit?

No. Employer match does not count against your employee elective deferral limit. It may count toward broader annual plan addition limits.

Can I include bonus deferrals?

Yes. Add planned bonus deferrals in the bonus field. Confirm your payroll system allows the deferral rate you want on bonus income.

Why does age change the result?

Age can unlock catch-up contribution room. The calculator applies standard catch-up logic when you reach the eligible age range.

What if I already exceeded the target?

The calculator shows zero remaining need. You should review payroll settings and contact your plan administrator if excess deferrals are possible.

Why is my required paycheck percent high?

A high percent usually means the year is almost over, your YTD savings are low, or your target includes catch-up contributions.

Is the employer match exact?

No. It is an estimate. Actual match depends on your plan document, payroll rules, true-up policy, vesting, and eligible compensation.

Is this calculator tax advice?

No. It is a planning tool. Ask a qualified tax or benefits professional before making major payroll or retirement decisions.
