Carrying capacity must be realistic. The growth rate must match the stock, habitat, and season. Current biomass also matters, because weak stocks cannot safely support the same harvest as healthy stocks.

Why Biomass Matters

A logistic growth model assumes population growth is slow at very low biomass. It also slows near carrying capacity, where food, space, or habitat becomes limiting. Growth is strongest near half of carrying capacity. That point is called BMSY. The yield produced there is called MSY. Managers often apply a safety buffer because real ecosystems are noisy. Weather, recruitment, disease, and fishing effort can change results quickly.

Using the Result

This calculator compares planned catch with three useful limits. First, it estimates the theoretical MSY. Second, it applies your safety buffer. Third, it checks current surplus production at the biomass you entered. That third value is often the most cautious short term guide. If biomass is below BMSY, a lower catch may help the stock rebuild. If planned catch is above current production, the stock may decline under the model.

Limits and Good Practice

MSY is not a promise. It is a model based estimate. It does not replace local surveys, age structure, recruitment studies, or legal harvest rules. Compare optimistic and conservative cases. A good plan usually keeps harvest below the calculated limit and reviews biomass every season.

Advanced users should treat the buffer as a policy control. A high buffer reduces catch but protects against bad assumptions. A low buffer may fit strong monitoring programs. Use the rebuild time estimate when biomass is low. Use the equilibrium biomass estimate when planned catch is constant. Together, these outputs help turn raw population inputs into clearer harvest decisions.
