Mesh and Micron Conversion Guide
Mesh and micron values describe screen openings from two directions. Mesh counts wires per linear inch. Micron values describe the open gap between wires. A higher mesh count usually means a smaller opening. A lower micron value also means finer material. This calculator joins both ideas in one place.
Why Wire Diameter Matters
A mesh number alone is not enough for exact conversion. Wire thickness uses part of every inch. The remaining part becomes open space. Fine screens may have thin wires. Heavy industrial screens may use thicker wires. This difference changes the micron opening. That is why the calculator accepts wire diameter and units.
Reference Mode
Many users need a fast lookup. The reference table gives common mesh and micron pairs. These values are useful for estimates, quotes, and quick comparisons. They are not a legal sieve standard by themselves. Standards can vary by screen series, woven pattern, and manufacturing tolerance. Use certified sieve data for compliance work.
Formula Method
The formula method starts with one inch. It divides that inch by the mesh count. That gives the wire pitch. Then it subtracts wire diameter. The answer is the clear opening. The opening is converted to microns by multiplying inches by 25,400. Reverse conversion adds opening and wire thickness, then divides 25,400 by that total.
Practical Uses
Particle sizing is common in powders, minerals, filters, grains, plastics, and coatings. A lab may report particle size in microns. A supplier may list mesh count. A buyer may need both values before selecting a screen. This tool helps compare those values without manual steps. It also reports millimeters and inches for drawings.
Good Input Practice
Use positive numbers only. Match the wire diameter unit to your data sheet. Select reference interpolation when the wire size is unknown. Select formula mode when wire size is known.
