Calculator
Formula Used
Estimated rail fare: Minimum fare + Distance ratio × Fare range. The distance ratio is capped at the calculator fare distance limit. The exact rail fare override replaces this estimate.
Transit subtotal: Rail total + Regular bus total + Express bus total.
Transfer credit: Transfer links × Travel days × Paid riders × Credit per transfer. The credit cannot exceed the gross transit cost.
Stored value total: Gross transit cost − Transfer credit + Parking + New card cost + Other fees.
Pass plan total: Pass cost + Uncovered rail + Uncovered express + Parking + New card cost + Other fees.
Projection: Daily average × 5 for weekly cost. Weekly cost × 4.33 gives monthly cost. Weekly cost × 52 gives yearly cost.

DC Metro Cost Planning
Real Trip Costs
A DC Metro ride can look simple at first. The real budget often has more parts. Rail fare changes with time, distance, and rider status. Bus rides add a fixed amount. Express buses cost more. Transfers can lower the total. Parking, card fees, and pass choices can change the final answer.
This calculator brings those items into one place. It estimates rail cost from mileage, or it accepts an exact station fare. That makes it useful for quick planning and detailed commuting. You can model one trip, a round trip, a work week, or a longer period.
Why Fare Details Matter
Small choices can affect a monthly budget. A rider who transfers within two hours may receive a credit. A rider using a pass may lose that transfer credit, but the pass can still save money. A long rail trip may make a weekly pass attractive. A short bus commute may work better with stored value.
Parking also matters. Many riders forget station parking in the first estimate. Add the daily parking rate and parking days. The calculator includes that cost beside fares. It also lets you add a new card fee and any other travel charges.
Useful Planning Features
The tool separates rail, regular bus, express bus, transfer credits, pass cost, parking, and extra charges. It also displays daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly projections. These projections use the same travel pattern. They help users compare a normal commute with a visitor trip.
The pass comparison is helpful for frequent riders. Choose a pass type and let the calculator estimate uncovered charges. Unlimited passes cover rail and regular bus. They also cover the first part of express bus fare. Short trip passes may leave extra rail cost when a ride is above the covered value.
Best Use Cases
Use this calculator before a new commute starts. Use it before choosing stored value or a pass. Use it when comparing rail with bus. Use it for family trips, visitor plans, and parking budgets. The estimate is not a ticket price guarantee. Check the official trip planner for exact station fares. Save results as CSV or PDF for records. Share them with household members before buying a pass.
FAQs
1. Is this calculator an exact fare quote?
No. It gives a planning estimate. Use the exact rail fare override when you know the station-to-station fare. Check the official trip planner before travel.
2. Why is rail distance needed?
Rail fare depends on ride length and time. Distance helps estimate a fare when an exact station fare is not entered.
3. What does the manual rail fare field do?
It replaces the estimated rail fare. Enter the exact one-way fare per paid rider when you have it.
4. Can I compare passes?
Yes. Choose a pass type. The calculator compares the selected pass plan with stored value travel.
5. Why can pass users lose transfer credits?
Pass products may not receive normal transfer credits. The calculator removes transfer credits when a pass plan is selected.
6. Does the calculator include parking?
Yes. Enter parking days and daily parking cost. The parking total is added to the final trip budget.
7. Are children included?
Paid riders are included in fare math. Free children are shown for planning notes only and do not add fare cost.
8. Can I export the results?
Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet records. Use the PDF button for a simple printable summary.
