Formula Used

Delta price-based mode: Eligible spend = (base fare + carrier surcharge - credits) × passengers

Flight miles = eligible spend × (fare experience rate + Medallion bonus rate) × promotion multiplier + fixed bonus miles

Partner distance mode: Flight miles = distance per segment × segments × passengers × earning percentage × promotion multiplier + fixed bonus miles

Card miles: Card miles = charged ticket amount × selected card miles per dollar

The final total equals flight miles plus card miles. Government taxes and fees are excluded from flight-mile spend, but may still be part of the charged card amount.

About Delta Miles Earnings

Delta miles can be earned in several ways. The most common way is a paid flight. The earning method depends on the ticket type. It can also depend on the airline that sells or operates the flight.

Why Eligible Spend Matters

Many Delta-ticketed trips use a price-based method. The calculator starts with the base fare. It then adds carrier-imposed surcharges. Taxes and government fees are separated. They are displayed for clarity. They are not included in the flight mileage spend. This helps users avoid overstating results.

Status and Fare Experience

Fare experience is important. Classic and Refundable fares use one rate. Extra fares use another rate. Comfort Basic uses a lower rate. Main Basic is treated as ineligible. Medallion status can add bonus miles. The form separates the fare rate from the status bonus. This makes the calculation easier to audit.

Cards, Partners, and Promotions

Some users also earn miles from a co-branded card. Those miles are usually linked to the charged purchase amount. That amount may include taxes. The calculator keeps card miles separate from flight miles. This gives a cleaner view of each earning source.

Partner flights can work differently. Some partner tickets use distance and fare class. The distance mode estimates that case. Enter the distance per segment. Add the number of segments. Then enter the earning percentage. A discounted fare may earn less than full distance. A premium fare may earn more.

Planning With the Result

The final result is an estimate. It is useful before booking. It can compare fares, cabins, and card choices. It can also show whether a promotion changes the value of a trip. Always check the booking page and program terms before purchase. Airline rules can change. Partner charts can also change. Use the CSV and PDF exports to save assumptions. This makes later comparison easier.

FAQs

1. What does eligible spend mean?

Eligible spend is the part of the fare that earns flight miles. It usually includes base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges. It excludes government taxes and fees.

2. Why are taxes entered separately?

Taxes help estimate the charged ticket total. They are separated because flight mileage calculations normally exclude government-imposed taxes and fees.

3. Does Main Basic earn miles?

This calculator sets Main Basic or Basic Economy flight miles to zero. That keeps the estimate conservative for ineligible basic fare products.

4. How are Medallion bonus miles handled?

The calculator adds the selected Medallion bonus rate to the fare experience rate. The bonus is not added when the fare experience earns zero flight miles.

5. When should I use partner distance mode?

Use it when a ticket earns by distance and fare class instead of eligible spend. Enter segment distance, segment count, and the published earning percentage.

6. Are card miles the same as flight miles?

No. Card miles come from the payment card purchase. Flight miles come from the trip itself. The calculator shows both separately, then combines them.

7. What is the promotion multiplier?

It adjusts flight miles for special offers. Use 1 for no promotion. Use 2 for double miles. Use 1.5 for a fifty percent bonus.

8. Can the result be exact?

It is an estimate based on your inputs. Final miles may differ because of fare rules, partner charts, ticketing source, refunds, or program updates.
