Income Multiple = Hourly Wage / Median Wage Benchmark
Income Points = 3, 4, or 6 based on 1.5x, 2x, or 3x median wage.
Registration Points are selected from the eligible occupational registration field.
Primary Points = selected route points. If Auto is selected, the highest route is used.
Experience Points = minimum of 3 and completed New Zealand skilled work years.

New Zealand Skilled Points Planning Guide
Why Points Matter
New Zealand uses a focused points model for skilled residence planning. The system rewards strong human capital. It also rewards proven value in the local labour market. This calculator helps users test a likely pathway before they prepare documents.
Primary Point Routes
The main score comes from one primary route. You can test qualifications, occupational registration, or income. These routes should not be added together. The calculator can choose the highest route automatically. You can also force one route for a more careful comparison.
Work Experience Points
Eligible skilled work experience in New Zealand can add extra points. The calculator counts one point for each completed year. It stops at three points. This helps users see whether a weaker primary route can still reach the six point target.
Income Route Testing
The income route depends on the hourly wage compared with a median wage benchmark. The benchmark is editable. That is important because wage rules can change. Users should update the value before relying on the result.
Readiness Is Not Only Points
A good points score does not replace visa requirements. Applicants may still need a skilled job, an accredited employer, English evidence, and health and character checks. The readiness section highlights these common signals. It does not approve an application.
Better Planning
Use the output as a planning sheet. Compare several routes. Save the PDF for discussion. Keep notes about missing evidence. Then check the latest official guidance before submitting any expression of interest or residence application.
FAQs
1. What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates Skilled Migrant Category points using qualification, income, occupational registration, and New Zealand skilled work experience inputs.
2. Can I add qualification and income points together?
No. The calculator treats qualification, income, and occupational registration as alternative primary routes. It does not add those routes together.
3. How many points are needed?
The calculator uses a 6-point target. It shows whether your selected profile reaches, exceeds, or falls below that threshold.
4. Why is the median wage field editable?
Income thresholds can change. The editable field lets you update the benchmark before calculating income route points.
5. Does this guarantee visa approval?
No. It is only a planning tool. Immigration decisions depend on official rules, evidence, policy settings, and case assessment.
6. Why are readiness checks included?
Points are not the only concern. Age, skilled employment, employer accreditation, English, health, and character checks may still matter.
7. Can I download my result?
Yes. After calculation, the result area shows CSV and PDF download buttons for saving or sharing the estimate.
8. Should I verify the result?
Yes. Always check the latest Immigration New Zealand guidance before submitting an expression of interest or application.
