What Normal Depth Means
Normal depth is the steady water depth in a sloped pipe. It occurs when gravity, roughness, and flow are balanced. The water surface stays nearly parallel to the pipe slope. Designers use it for storm drains, culverts, sewers, and small channel links.
Why This Tool Helps
Pipe flow is not always full. Many pipes carry open channel flow during normal service. A circular section changes area and wetted perimeter as depth changes. This calculator solves that changing shape. It also reports hydraulic radius, velocity, Froude number, full flow capacity, and depth ratio. These values help you judge capacity, stability, and maintenance risk.
Key Design Checks
A good result is more than one depth number. Velocity should be high enough to move sediment. It should not be so high that erosion or noise becomes a problem. Depth ratio shows how much spare pipe height remains. Froude number tells whether flow is subcritical, critical, or supercritical. Subcritical flow is common in mild drainage slopes. Supercritical flow may need outlet protection.
Using Manning Roughness
Manning roughness is a major input. Smooth plastic pipe has a lower value. Older concrete or corrugated metal has a higher value. A small change in roughness can change depth and velocity. Use project standards when they exist. Use conservative values for aged pipes or uncertain field conditions.
Reading the Results
If required flow is above the open channel maximum, the pipe may surcharge. That means the water surface may pressurize the pipe. This calculator flags that condition. If the depth is very close to the crown, review inlet control, outlet control, and backwater effects. Normal depth is still useful, but it is not a complete network model.
Practical Notes
Use consistent units. Check slope direction and value. A slope of one percent is entered differently than a decimal slope of 0.01. For final design, compare results with local codes. Field conditions, debris, bends, junctions, and tailwater can change real performance. The calculator gives a strong first pass for planning, estimates, and review.
Safety Margin
Keep a clear design margin when data is uncertain. Repeat the check with higher roughness, lower slope, and peak flow. This shows sensitivity before construction begins.
