About This NYSUT Pension Calculator
This estimator helps school employees make a practical pension projection. It is not an official benefit statement. It uses salary, credited service, retirement age, tier, and optional reductions. The goal is simple. You can test retirement dates before speaking with your system.
Why the Estimate Matters
A pension choice affects income for life. Small changes in service credit may change the pension factor. A different retirement age may also change the age factor. The calculator places those details in one form. It shows the annual benefit, monthly benefit, replacement ratio, survivor adjusted amount, and projected lifetime value.
Using Final Average Salary
Final average salary is central to the estimate. You may enter it directly. You may also enter three or five salary years. The tool then averages them. Use regular pensionable pay only when possible. Exclude items that your retirement system does not count. This keeps the result more realistic.
Reviewing Tier Rules
The automatic mode includes simplified public tier patterns. Tier 3 and 4 estimates use lower factors before twenty years. They use two percent through thirty years. Tier 5 starts its two percent pattern at twenty five years. Tier 6 uses the twenty year threshold and extra service rule. You can also select a custom factor.
Planning With Reductions
Age reductions, payment options, and beneficiary choices can lower the payable amount. The calculator lets you enter an age factor and an option adjustment. You may enter one hundred percent when no reduction applies. You may reduce it for early retirement or survivor protection.
Important Limitations
This page is an educational estimator. It cannot confirm eligibility, vesting, loans, service purchases, salary caps, sick leave credit, or legal limits. Rules can differ by system and tier. Always compare results with your retirement account, employer records, union guidance, and official counseling before filing.
Next Steps After Estimating
Save the report after each scenario. Compare one date against another. Look for changes in the monthly figure. Also review health coverage timing, taxes, spouse income, debt, and savings. A pension is only one part of retirement planning. Use this result as a starting point for better questions before choosing a final retirement application date with clear personal confidence.
