Overall wheel width: overall width = wheel width + lip allowance

Backspacing from offset: backspacing = overall width / 2 + offset / 25.4

Offset from backspacing: offset = (backspacing - overall width / 2) × 25.4

Effective offset with spacer: effective offset = offset - spacer thickness

Effective backspacing: effective backspacing = overall width / 2 + effective offset / 25.4

Outer poke change: new outer position - old outer position

Inner clearance change: new inner position - old inner position

A positive inner change means the wheel moves closer to suspension parts. A positive outer change means the wheel pokes farther toward the fender.

Wheel fitment looks simple, yet small numbers can change a car’s stance. Offset tells where the mounting face sits compared with the wheel centerline. Backspacing tells the distance from the mounting face to the inner wheel lip. Both measurements describe the same position from different directions.

Wheel Width and Lip Allowance

Wheel width is usually measured between bead seats. The real outside width is often about one inch wider because of wheel lips. That is why the calculator includes lip allowance. The common default is one inch. You can change it if your wheel maker gives a different value.

Positive offset pulls the wheel inward. Negative offset pushes the wheel outward. More backspacing also moves the inner edge closer to suspension parts. Less backspacing usually increases outer poke. Spacers reduce effective offset and increase poke. They also reduce backspacing in the final mounted position.

Fitment Safety

Use the results as planning guidance. Always check fender space, brake clearance, suspension clearance, hub bore, load rating, and lug seat type. A perfect offset number does not guarantee safe fitment. Tire shape also matters. Two tires with the same listed width may have different shoulder profiles.
