About This Pennsylvania Medicaid Estimate

Pennsylvania Medicaid is called Medical Assistance. It helps eligible residents get health coverage for doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, pregnancy care, and many preventive services. Eligibility is not decided by one number only. The state reviews household size, countable income, age, pregnancy, disability, citizenship or qualified status, residency, and program category.

Why Income Limits Change

This calculator uses federal poverty guideline math. It compares your annualized income with the poverty guideline for your household size. Each coverage group then uses a percentage limit. Pregnant people and infants have a higher limit. Young children have another limit. Adults ages nineteen through sixty four are usually screened through expansion rules. Some seniors and disabled applicants follow non MAGI rules.

What The Result Means

A likely eligible result means your entered income is within the selected screening limit. It does not guarantee approval. The County Assistance Office may ask for proof of wages, tax filing status, household members, pregnancy, immigration status, or other details. A review needed result means your case may need manual rules beyond this simple income test.

Useful Planning Tips

Use gross income before taxes unless a worker tells you otherwise. Add income from wages, self employment, unemployment, taxable benefits, and other countable sources. Do not include every benefit automatically. Some payments may be excluded. When unsure, keep records and report the facts during the official application.

Best Way To Apply

After using this page, apply through Pennsylvania COMPASS or contact your County Assistance Office. You can also seek help from a navigator, clinic, legal aid group, or benefits counselor. Medicaid rules can change during the year. Final eligibility always belongs to the state. This page is a planning aid, not legal advice, and not a replacement for a complete application review.

When To Double Check

Double check the result if income changes often, someone is pregnant, a child has special needs, or a household member is older than sixty four. Also review the answer if you pay large medical bills. Pennsylvania has several pathways. A short online estimate can miss important exceptions, deductions, and documents. Save the report for your records. Keep copies of pay stubs, tax forms, notices, application receipts, and renewal letters.

FAQs

Is this calculator an official Medicaid decision?

No. It is only an estimate. Pennsylvania decides final eligibility after reviewing your application, documents, income, household details, and program category.

What income should I enter?

Enter gross income before taxes. Include wages, self employment income, unemployment, and other countable income. Some income may be excluded during official review.

Should pregnancy change household size?

Yes, pregnancy can increase household size by the number of unborn children. Enter household size first, then add unborn children in the separate field.

Why does the calculator show manual review?

Some people follow non-MAGI rules. Seniors, disabled applicants, Medicare recipients, and long term care applicants may have resource and deduction rules.

Can children over the Medicaid limit still get help?

Possibly. A child who is over the Medicaid income screen may be reviewed for other coverage, including CHIP or another state pathway.

Does this calculator check assets?

No. MAGI groups usually focus on income. Some non-MAGI groups may require asset or resource tests during official review.

What if my income changes every month?

Use your best current estimate. Keep pay stubs and records. Report changes during the official application or renewal process.

Where should I apply after estimating?

Apply through Pennsylvania COMPASS, a County Assistance Office, or a trusted benefits helper. Use this page only as preparation.
