Example Data Table

These examples show common character setups and expected load behavior.

Character Strength Size Body Total Gear Likely Result
Human Fighter 16 Medium Biped 96 lb Medium Load
Halfling Rogue 10 Small Biped 38 lb Medium Load
Warhorse 18 Large Quadruped 420 lb Medium Load
Ogre Guard 21 Large Biped 500 lb Heavy Load

Formula Used

The calculator starts with the carrying capacity table for the entered Strength score. If Strength is above 29, every additional 10 Strength multiplies capacity by 4. The masterwork backpack option adds 1 effective Strength before table lookup.

Final capacity equals base capacity multiplied by size factor, body factor, and any magical or custom multiplier.

Total carried weight = gear weight + armor weight + shield weight + coin weight + extra load.

Coin weight = coin count ÷ coins per pound.

Lift overhead equals heavy load. Lift off ground equals twice heavy load. Push or drag equals five times heavy load.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the character name and Strength score.
  2. Select the correct size and body type.
  3. Add gear, armor, shield, coins, and extra carried weight.
  4. Use the capacity multiplier for spells or special effects.
  5. Enable the backpack option when it applies.
  6. Press the calculate button to view limits and penalties.
  7. Download the result as CSV or PDF for session notes.

Pathfinder Carry Capacity Guide

Why Encumbrance Matters

Carrying capacity shapes travel, combat, and exploration. A hero can own many items. Yet not every item should stay on the character sheet. Too much weight can slow movement. It can also reduce combat options. This calculator helps players check those limits before a session begins.

Planning Better Gear Loads

Good load planning starts with Strength. A strong fighter can carry armor, weapons, rope, rations, and treasure. A smaller rogue may need lighter tools. Spellcasters may prefer scrolls, pouches, and compact kits. The calculator separates armor, shield, coins, and gear. This makes each source of weight easier to review.

Size and Creature Type

Size changes carrying limits. A Large creature can carry far more than a Medium creature. A Small character carries less. Quadrupeds also handle weight better than bipeds. Mounts, animal companions, and pack animals should use the quadruped option. This creates a better estimate for travel loads.

Magic and Special Equipment

Some effects change capacity. Ant Haul is a common example. Enter 3 in the multiplier field when that effect applies. You may also enter other values for house rules, items, or campaign features. The masterwork backpack checkbox adds one effective Strength for capacity only.

Reading the Result

The result shows light, medium, and heavy limits. It also shows lift, drag, speed, Dexterity limits, and check penalties. The warning line tells you the current load state. Use the remaining capacity value before dividing treasure. It prevents surprise penalties during travel.

Table Use at the Game Table

The export buttons help save results. A CSV file works well for spreadsheets. A PDF works well for printed notes. Game masters can also use the calculator for monsters, hirelings, mounts, and caravan planning.

FAQs

1. What does this calculator measure?

It measures light, medium, and heavy carrying limits. It also estimates lift, push, drag, speed, Dexterity limits, and skill penalties.

2. Does size affect carrying capacity?

Yes. Size changes the final load limits. Smaller creatures carry less. Larger creatures carry more. Quadrupeds use stronger carrying multipliers.

3. How are coins counted?

Coin weight equals coin count divided by coins per pound. The default value is 50 coins per pound, which fits common Pathfinder play.

4. What does the capacity multiplier do?

It applies special effects. Use 1 for normal carrying. Use 3 for Ant Haul. You can enter other values for items or house rules.

5. What is a heavy load?

A heavy load is the highest weight a character can carry while still moving. It usually causes strong movement and skill penalties.

6. Can this calculator handle mounts?

Yes. Select the mount size and choose Quadruped. Then enter rider, saddle, armor, supplies, and other carried weight.

7. What does masterwork backpack mean?

The checkbox adds one effective Strength for capacity calculation. It does not change attack rolls, damage, skills, or other Strength checks.

8. Can I save the result?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet records. Use the PDF button for session notes, printed sheets, or shared campaign planning.
