Pontoon Prop Selection Guide
A pontoon boat propeller must balance thrust, engine speed, load, and handling. Pontoons usually need more blade grip than light planing boats. Their tubes create drag. Their decks carry passengers, coolers, fuel, and gear. That load changes how the prop works in real water.
Why Pitch Matters
Pitch is the forward distance a prop should travel in one perfect turn. More pitch can raise speed, but it also lowers engine RPM. Less pitch helps heavy loads move easier. It can improve acceleration, docking control, and towing response. The correct pitch lets the motor reach its recommended wide open throttle range.
Slip and Real Speed
No pontoon prop moves with perfect efficiency. Water flexes and slips around each blade. This loss is called prop slip. A clean setup may show moderate slip. Use the result as a tuning guide, not a final sea trial verdict. Test with normal fuel, normal passengers, and usual gear. Trim the motor correctly. Record RPM and GPS speed in calm water. If RPM is too low, reduce pitch. If RPM is too high, increase pitch. Inspect the hub and blades before buying another prop.
Best Practical Choice
