Understanding Portland Cement Grout Volume
Portland cement grout fills joints, voids, sleeves, cells, and narrow construction gaps. Its volume is easy to underestimate because dry mix shrinks, surfaces vary, and waste occurs during placing. A careful estimate protects budgets and prevents cold joints caused by missing material.
Why volume matters
Grout is usually ordered by bag yield, not by dry bag weight. Yield tells how many liters or cubic feet one mixed bag provides. The calculator first finds the net space. It then adds waste, shrinkage, and handling loss. This gives a practical batch volume for purchasing and mixing.
Main input choices
The tool supports tiled joints, rectangular voids, cylindrical holes, annular spaces, and custom volume entry. Tiled work uses surface area, tile size, joint width, and joint depth. Rectangular voids use length, width, and depth. Cylindrical work uses diameter and depth. Annular work subtracts the inner pipe or core from the outer sleeve.
Planning better grout batches
Always measure actual field dimensions. Small joint width changes can create large volume changes across a wide floor or wall. For rough masonry, add more allowance. For smooth tile, a lower allowance may work. Pumping, buckets, spills, and cleanup all require extra grout. Use the waste fields to reflect real site conditions.
Density and weight
Volume is the primary result, but weight also matters. Density converts mixed volume into mass. This helps with lifting plans, storage limits, and delivery checks. Dense sanded grout weighs more than neat cement grout. Use a supplier yield sheet when available.
Cost control
The bag count is rounded upward because partial bags cannot usually be purchased. The calculator multiplies rounded bags by bag price. This gives an order estimate, not a final invoice. Local prices, admixtures, water ratio, and labor should be considered separately.
