Raised Panel Planning Guide
A raised panel door needs balanced frame parts and a correctly sized center panel. Small errors can create tight joints, loose panels, or visible gaps. Why Accurate Panel Sizing Matters
The center panel should float inside the frame. Wood moves across the grain as humidity changes. A panel that is too large can bind and push the frame apart. A panel that is too small can rattle or expose an edge. The groove depth and clearance fields help you keep that movement space under control.
Frame Cut Planning
Stiles normally run the full door height. Rails fit between the stiles, but many joinery methods add tenons at both rail ends. The calculator separates visible door size from rail cut length. That makes the output useful for cope and stick cutters, tongue and groove frames, and simple shop layouts.
Material and Cost Control
Raised panel doors often use wider boards than flat panels. Waste can increase when boards must be matched for grain and appearance. This tool estimates frame board feet, panel board feet, waste-adjusted material, finishing area, finishing cost, overhead, and total project cost. It also reports cost per door, which helps compare several design options.
Best Shop Use
Use measured final door dimensions, not cabinet opening dimensions. Check your hinge overlay, reveal, and door gap before entering values. Enter the actual cutter groove depth and tenon length used in your setup. If you plan to raise the panel on both faces, keep the thickness field accurate. Save the CSV for cut lists. Save the PDF for client notes or workshop records.
The result should still be checked against your tools. Router bits, shaper cutters, saw kerfs, and sanding steps can change final fit. Test cuts are wise before production.
