Formula Used

The Raygor method is graph based. It uses a selected sample and compares sentence count with long word count. This calculator creates a transparent graph style estimate from those two values.

Words per sample = selected sample size
Sentence density = (sentences in sample / words in sample) × 100
Long word density = (words with selected letter length / words in sample) × 100
Graph style grade = 2.25 + (0.25 × long word density) + (0.35 × (15 - sentence density))

The last line is a practical approximation for digital use. Traditional Raygor scoring is read from a graph.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Paste the text you want to test.
  2. Choose whether to analyze the whole text or selected samples.
  3. Keep the long word setting at six letters for the usual Raygor style check.
  4. Press the calculate button.
  5. Review the grade, sentence density, and long word density.
  6. Download the CSV or PDF report for records.

Raygor Readability Guide

Why readability matters

Clear writing helps readers stay focused. A text may contain useful ideas, yet still fail when sentences feel heavy. The Raygor method gives editors a fast way to test difficulty. It works well for lessons, handouts, manuals, and web articles. It does not judge meaning. It only estimates how demanding the surface style may feel.

What the calculator checks

This calculator studies sentence density and long word density. It can review the whole text or create beginning, middle, and ending samples. The three sample option is useful for longer pages because introductions and conclusions can differ from the main body. You also get average sentence length, long word rate, and a grade style result.

How to improve a high score

A high level usually means the text has many long words, few sentence breaks, or both. Start by splitting long sentences. Then replace formal terms with direct words when accuracy stays the same. Keep names, required terms, and technical labels when readers need them. Good plain language should protect meaning, not remove important detail.

Best uses

Use this tool before publishing educational content. It is also helpful during editing sprints. Writers can compare drafts and see whether changes reduce effort. Teachers can check if a passage fits a class level. Marketers can test product pages before launch. Support teams can simplify help documents.

Limits of the result

Raygor is a guide, not a final verdict. It cannot measure reader interest, layout, background knowledge, or cultural context. A short legal sentence may still be difficult. A long science term may be necessary. Review the score with your audience in mind. Combine the number with human judgment, examples, headings, and good design.

Editing workflow

Run a first check on the original draft. Save the result. Edit one section at a time. Use shorter openings, clearer verbs, and fewer stacked modifiers. Check again after each major revision. The comparison table and downloads help you document progress for clients, classrooms, or internal content teams.

For best results, test real reader material. Avoid menus, references, and unrelated lists. They can distort sentence counts.

Use notes beside every score shown.

FAQs

What is a Raygor readability calculator?

It estimates reading grade level by checking sentence count and long words in a sample. The result helps writers judge whether text may feel easy, moderate, or difficult for readers.

What is a long word in Raygor scoring?

A long word is usually a word with six or more letters. This calculator lets you adjust that setting when your project needs a different definition.

Should I use the whole text or samples?

Use the whole text for short drafts. Use beginning, middle, and ending samples for longer content. That gives a more balanced view of the full document.

Is the grade result exact?

No. Traditional Raygor scoring uses a graph. This tool gives a graph style estimate for fast digital checking. Use it with editorial judgment.

Why does sentence count affect the score?

Fewer sentences per 100 words usually means longer sentences. Longer sentences often increase reading effort, especially when they include dense ideas or many clauses.

Can technical terms raise the score?

Yes. Technical terms are often long. Keep necessary terms, but explain them clearly. Add examples, headings, and shorter sentences to support readers.

What does the CSV download include?

The CSV file includes summary metrics and sample level details. You can open it in spreadsheet tools for review, comparison, or client reporting.

How can I lower the readability level?

Split long sentences, choose direct words, remove clutter, and add clear transitions. Do not remove important meaning just to reduce the score.
