Why Reef Flow Matters
Flow is more than moving water. It carries oxygen across rock, sand, and coral tissue. It also moves waste toward filters. A reef with weak circulation can develop dead spots. Detritus settles there and fuels algae. Strong but chaotic motion helps corals feed. It also keeps temperatures steadier.
Choosing a Target
Every tank needs a target turnover. Soft coral systems often use modest movement. Mixed reefs need wider coverage. SPS reefs usually need stronger, changing current. The best target is not only a number. It also depends on aquascape, coral placement, and pump angles. Use the calculator as a planning guide. Then watch the animals and adjust.
Return Pumps and Wave Pumps
Return flow is useful, but it is not the whole plan. Head height, elbows, valves, and dirty pipes reduce output. Wave pumps add broad movement inside the display. Their duty cycle matters too. A pump running half power does not deliver its full label rating. Combining both sources gives a clearer estimate.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
Do not aim every pump directly at coral tissue. Sharp jets can irritate polyps and tear flesh. Bounce flow off glass or rock when possible. Cross flow can remove debris from hidden areas. Leave quiet zones for fish that rest at night. Check sand movement after changes. If sand blows constantly, redirect the pump or lower power.
Using Results Wisely
The result shows turnover, surplus, deficit, and suggested extra flow. A deficit means the tank may need more internal circulation. A surplus is not always bad. Many reef animals enjoy variable movement. Still, steady blasting flow is stressful. Use controllers, alternating modes, and cleaning schedules. Clean pumps often. A dirty impeller can drop real output. Record readings after each change. This makes future upgrades easier and safer.
Maintenance Checks
Review flow after feeding, cleaning, and coral growth. New branches can block old paths. Snails can move pump guards. Algae can reduce intake area. Test one change at a time. Keep notes on noise, bubbles, sand drift, and coral extension. The best setting is stable, gentle, and varied. It should move debris without making the reef look stressed. Recheck values after coral or equipment changes.
