Why Final Drive Ratio Matters
A ring and pinion set controls the final drive ratio inside the differential. It changes how many driveshaft turns are needed for one tire turn. A higher numeric ratio, such as 4.56, multiplies torque more strongly. It also raises engine rpm at the same road speed. A lower numeric ratio, such as 3.08, reduces cruise rpm. It may feel weaker when starting, towing, or climbing.
