| Armor plus shield cap | 542 | 5 | 125 | 667 | 80.00% | 0 |
Formula Used
The calculator separates displayed armor from hidden armor. It then applies the physical damage reduction cap.
Hidden armor = armor items worn × 25 Effective armor = displayed armor + hidden armor Raw damage reduction = effective armor × 0.12% Final damage reduction = min(raw reduction, 80%) Damage taken = incoming physical damage × (1 - final reduction) Effective health = health ÷ (1 - final reduction)
In piece mode, the displayed estimate uses armor skill, armor perk ranks, fitted bonuses, matching set bonuses, shield bonuses, and extra armor effects.

Skyrim Armor Rating Guide
Why Armor Rating Matters
Armor rating is one of the main survival numbers in Skyrim. It reduces physical damage from weapons, arrows, claws, and many melee attacks. The value shown in the inventory is useful, but it is not the whole story. The game also gives a hidden bonus for worn armor items. That hidden value changes the real protection level.
Displayed Rating Versus Real Protection
This calculator keeps displayed rating and hidden rating separate. That helps you see why a build can feel stronger than the number suggests. A full four-piece armor set adds a hidden total of one hundred rating. A shield can add another hidden bonus when worn. The final effective rating is what drives physical damage reduction.
Planning Around the Armor Cap
The armor cap is important for efficient builds. Extra rating past the cap does not improve normal physical damage reduction. This means you can stop investing after reaching the cap. You may then spend enchantments, perks, or smithing effort on health, stamina, magic resistance, damage, or utility. Efficient planning makes characters stronger.
Using Advanced Inputs
Direct mode is best for live characters. Open the inventory and enter the displayed armor rating. Then enter the number of worn armor items. Piece mode is better for planning. Add each armor piece, skill level, perk rank, set bonuses, and shield bonuses. The result estimates displayed rating before applying the hidden bonus.
Reading the Result
The damage reduction number shows how much physical damage is blocked. The test hit shows expected damage after armor. Effective health shows how much raw physical damage your health can survive. The cap gap shows how much more rating is needed. Use the export buttons to save builds and compare upgrades.
FAQs
What does Skyrim armor rating reduce?
It reduces normal physical damage. This includes many weapon, arrow, and creature attacks. It does not replace magic resistance, elemental resistance, poison resistance, or special defensive effects.
What is hidden armor rating?
Hidden armor rating is an extra value added for worn armor items. The calculator uses 25 points for each worn armor item. A shield can be counted when worn.
What is the armor cap?
The physical damage reduction cap is 80%. In this calculator, the cap is reached when displayed armor plus hidden armor reaches about 667 effective rating.
Why does four-piece armor cap at 567 displayed rating?
Four armor pieces add 100 hidden rating. A displayed rating of 567 plus 100 hidden rating gives 667 effective rating, which reaches the 80% reduction cap.
Should I use direct mode or piece mode?
Use direct mode for an existing character. Use piece mode when planning gear, perks, skill level, shields, and set bonuses before building the character.
Does this calculator handle shields?
Yes. You can enter a shield rating in piece mode. You can also count the shield as one hidden armor item when using direct mode.
Can it compare smithing upgrades?
Yes. Enter upgraded displayed values or piece values. Then compare damage reduction, cap gap, and effective health before and after the upgrade.
Will modded armor work?
Usually yes, if the mod follows normal armor rating behavior. Enter the displayed value directly for the safest estimate when using modded gear.
