Formula Used

Gross area: length × width, or the manual square foot value.

Net area: gross area − openings. Then multiply by the number of similar areas.

Depth from target R: target R value ÷ R value per inch.

Required depth: greater value of planned thickness or depth from target R.

Base board feet: total net area × required depth in inches.

Adjusted board feet: base board feet × (1 + waste %) × (1 + yield loss %).

Kits needed: adjusted board feet ÷ kit yield, rounded up.

Total cost: material cost + labor cost.

Spray foam planning starts with area, depth, foam yield, and waste. A small error can change the number of kits needed. This calculator turns those inputs into board feet, usable coverage, pass counts, and project cost. It works for attic decks, walls, rim joists, crawl spaces, and small sealing jobs. You can enter a measured area, or you can build the area from length and width. Openings are removed, so doors, windows, and service gaps do not inflate the estimate.

Why Board Feet Matter

Spray foam is commonly sold by board feet. One board foot covers one square foot at one inch thick. A wall with 200 square feet at three inches needs 600 board feet before waste. Real projects need more. Surface texture, overspray, trimming, hose loss, and temperature can reduce usable yield. The waste and yield loss fields help reflect that job reality. The kit count is rounded up, because partial kits cannot usually be purchased.

Depth, R Value, and Passes

Open cell and closed cell products have different thermal values. The calculator uses common default R values per inch, but you can adjust depth directly. When you enter a target R value, the tool can raise the required thickness if the target needs more foam. Pass thickness also matters. Many products require several thinner passes instead of one thick lift. The pass estimate supports safer planning and better scheduling.

Cost and Buying Control

Material cost is based on kit count, not exact board feet. This avoids underpricing the final purchase. Labor can be added with a rate per adjusted board foot. For best accuracy, measure each cavity separately. Group similar depths together. Record unusual framing, pipes, and uneven surfaces before entering totals. This improves ordering and reduces expensive return trips on site later.
