Priming Guide for Better Bottles
A priming calculator helps brewers add the right sugar before bottling. The goal is simple. Yeast eats the sugar. Carbon dioxide forms inside the sealed bottle. That gas dissolves into the beer and creates fizz. Too little sugar gives flat beer. Too much sugar can create gushers, leaks, or broken glass.
This tool starts with batch volume, beer temperature, target carbonation, and sugar type. Temperature matters because finished beer already holds some carbon dioxide. Cold beer keeps more gas. Warm beer keeps less gas. The calculator estimates that residual gas first. Then it only adds enough fermentable sugar to reach the target level.
Sugar choice also changes the result. Table sugar ferments very efficiently. Corn sugar usually needs a little more weight. A good target depends on beer style and packaging. English ales often use gentle carbonation. German wheat beers and saisons can use higher values. Standard longneck bottles are not designed for extreme pressure. Strong bottles, champagne bottles, or kegs are better for very high carbonation. Always inspect bottles before filling.
The bottle size option helps divide the batch dose into a useful per bottle estimate. Batch priming is usually more even. Dissolve the sugar in boiled water, cool it, then mix gently with the beer. Avoid splashing because oxygen can damage flavor. Bottle quickly after mixing.

Confirm final gravity is stable before bottling. Leave proper headspace. Store bottles in a safe place during conditioning. Chill one test bottle before opening the full batch.
