Formula Used
Gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay + double-time pay + bonus + commission + taxable fringe benefits.
Federal taxable wages = gross pay minus federal pre-tax deductions.
Adjusted annual wage = federal taxable wages × pay periods + W-4 other income − W-4 deductions − 2026 withholding adjustment.
Federal withholding = annual percentage-method tax − annual credits, divided by pay periods, plus extra withholding.
Social Security = eligible FICA wages × 6.2%, limited by the annual wage base.
Medicare = eligible FICA wages × 1.45%. Additional Medicare tax applies after the payroll trigger is crossed.
Net pay = gross pay − taxes − pre-tax deductions − post-tax deductions + non-taxable reimbursements.
How to Use This Calculator

Enter annual credits, extra withholding, and other income only when they apply. Add year-to-date Social Security and Medicare wages for better high-income calculations. Enter pre-tax and post-tax deductions carefully. Press the calculate button. The result appears above the form. Use CSV or PDF buttons to save your estimate.
Understanding Tennessee Paycheck Estimates
A Tennessee paycheck can look simple at first. The state does not withhold a broad wage income tax. That makes the state line easy to read. Yet federal withholding, FICA, benefits, retirement plans, and other deductions still change every check.
Gross Pay Comes First
Start with the total earned for the pay period. Hourly workers should enter regular hours and overtime hours. Salaried workers can enter annual salary or a fixed period salary. Add bonuses, commissions, and taxable fringe benefits. Do not include accountable reimbursements as taxable wages. Add them as reimbursements instead. This keeps taxable pay cleaner.
Pre-Tax Deductions Matter
Some deductions reduce federal taxable pay. A traditional 401(k) usually lowers federal taxable wages. It usually does not reduce Social Security or Medicare wages. Section 125 benefits, many health premiums, HSA amounts, and FSA amounts may reduce both federal taxable wages and FICA wages. Always check payroll records. Benefit rules can vary by plan.
Federal Withholding Uses W-4 Data
The federal estimate uses filing status, pay frequency, Step 2 selection, dependents, other income, extra deductions, and extra withholding. These entries can create very different results for two workers with the same wage. A complete W-4 gives the best estimate. Review it after marriage, a second job, or a new dependent.
FICA Has Two Parts
Social Security applies only up to the annual wage base. Medicare applies to all covered wages. High earners may also see Additional Medicare tax once payroll wages pass the employer withholding trigger. Year-to-date wage fields help estimate that crossing point. They are very important near the annual limits.
Use Results for Planning
This tool is useful for budgeting, reviewing deductions, comparing job offers, or checking a raise. It can also test a larger 401(k) contribution. Try one change at a time. Then compare the new net pay. Small changes can affect cash flow. This helps you spot payroll differences faster each payday and avoid surprises. The estimate is not a final tax return. Payroll systems can include special benefits, local rules, corrections, and employer policies. Use the result as a planning guide, then compare it with your actual pay stub.
FAQs
Does Tennessee withhold state income tax from wages?
No. This calculator sets Tennessee state wage income tax to zero. Federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, and benefit deductions can still reduce take-home pay.
Why is my federal withholding only an estimate?
Federal withholding depends on your W-4, taxable wages, pay frequency, benefits, credits, and extra withholding. Payroll software may also include corrections or special wage rules.
Should I enter annual or per-check deductions?
Most deduction fields are per pay period. W-4 other income, W-4 extra deductions, and W-4 credits are annual fields because the federal method annualizes wages.
Does a traditional 401(k) reduce FICA tax?
Usually no. A traditional 401(k) often reduces federal taxable wages, but Social Security and Medicare usually still apply to those wages.
How does overtime affect the result?
Overtime increases gross pay and may raise federal withholding. The calculator lets you set overtime hours and the multiplier, so special policies can be estimated.
Why enter year-to-date Social Security wages?
Social Security tax stops after the annual wage base. Year-to-date wages help the calculator reduce or stop Social Security tax at the correct point.
What is Additional Medicare tax?
Additional Medicare tax is extra withholding on high wages. Employers withhold it after payroll wages pass the federal employer trigger during the year.
Can I download my results?
