Formula Used

Gross pay: salary per period, or hourly pay plus overtime, double-time, commissions, and bonus.

Federal taxable pay: gross pay minus 401(k), health, HSA, FSA, and other pre-tax amounts. The calculator annualizes this amount, adds W-4 other income, subtracts W-4 deductions and the standard deduction, applies progressive federal brackets, subtracts annual credits, then divides by pay periods.

FICA: Social Security equals taxable Social Security wages times 6.2%, up to the yearly wage base. Medicare equals FICA taxable wages times 1.45%. Additional Medicare equals 0.9% on wages above the employee threshold.

Tennessee withholding: Tennessee earned wage withholding is shown as $0. Optional local or other payroll tax can be entered manually.

Net pay: gross pay minus pre-tax deductions, federal tax, FICA, Tennessee tax, local tax, after-tax deductions, and garnishments.

Tennessee Paycheck Planning Guide

Why Net Pay Matters

A paycheck is more than a gross wage. Your deposit changes after taxes, benefits, savings, and deductions. Tennessee workers often notice a simple state line. The state does not withhold income tax from earned wages. Federal rules still apply. FICA also applies to most employee wages. This calculator gives a practical estimate before payday.

Earnings and Overtime

Start with your pay type. Salary users can enter one gross amount for the pay period. Hourly users can add regular hours, overtime hours, and double-time hours. The overtime multiplier lets you model time and a half, special rates, or custom company rules. Commissions, tips, and bonuses can be included with the same check.

Taxes and Deductions

Federal withholding depends on filing status, pay frequency, annualized taxable wages, credits, and extra withholding. Pre-tax deductions can reduce taxable income. Some benefits also reduce FICA wages. A traditional 401(k) usually reduces federal taxable wages, but it often remains subject to FICA. That difference matters when reviewing payroll results.

Year-to-Date Wages

High earners should enter year-to-date Social Security and Medicare wages. Social Security stops after the wage base is reached. Medicare has no wage base. Additional Medicare can begin when wages pass the employee threshold. These fields make the estimate more useful later in the year.

Better Payroll Decisions

Use the result to test savings changes, benefit elections, and bonus methods. Try one version with a higher 401(k) amount. Try another with extra federal withholding. Compare the net pay and annual net estimate. The calculator is only an estimate. Your employer payroll system may use exact IRS withholding tables and company benefit rules.

FAQs

1. Does Tennessee withhold state income tax from paychecks?

Tennessee does not withhold state income tax from earned wages. This calculator sets Tennessee wage withholding to zero and lets you add any local or other payroll deduction manually.

2. Is this calculator exact for payroll?

No. It is an estimator. Actual payroll can vary because of company benefit rules, IRS withholding tables, payroll rounding, special wage types, and employee W-4 settings.

3. Why is 401(k) treated differently from health benefits?

Traditional 401(k) deductions usually reduce federal taxable wages, but they commonly remain subject to FICA. Many health, HSA, and FSA deductions can reduce both federal taxable wages and FICA wages.

4. How are bonuses calculated?

You can aggregate the bonus with regular wages or apply a flat supplemental federal rate. The aggregate method annualizes the bonus with the paycheck. The supplemental option applies 22% to taxable bonus pay.

5. What are year-to-date wages used for?

They help estimate Social Security limits and Additional Medicare tax. Entering year-to-date wages is most helpful for high earners or for checks late in the calendar year.

6. Can I use this for hourly overtime?

Yes. Select hourly pay, enter regular hours, overtime hours, the overtime multiplier, and double-time hours. The calculator adds those earnings before taxes and deductions.

7. Why can my net pay be lower than expected?

Pre-tax benefits, federal withholding, FICA, after-tax deductions, garnishments, and extra withholding can reduce take-home pay. Review each result row to find the largest reduction.

8. What should I do before changing withholding?

Compare several scenarios first. Then review your W-4, expected annual income, credits, deductions, and refund goal. Consider asking a tax professional for personal advice.
