Formula Used

Running watts = critical watts + optional watts.

Adjusted watts = running watts × (1 + growth percent ÷ 100).

Load with margin = adjusted watts × (1 + safety margin ÷ 100).

Continuous VA = load with margin ÷ power factor.

Surge VA = adjusted watts × surge multiplier ÷ power factor.

Recommended VA = greater value of continuous VA and surge VA.

Required battery Ah = battery energy needed ÷ (battery voltage × discharge limit × battery health).

Estimated runtime = usable battery watt hours ÷ load with margin.

Why Proper UPS Sizing Matters

An uninterruptible power supply is not chosen by guesswork. It should match the real load, the desired backup time, and the battery bank limits. A small unit may beep, overload, or shut down early. An oversized unit may waste money and space. This calculator helps compare both sides before purchase.

Load and VA Rating

Start with the running watts of all protected equipment. Add computers, monitors, routers, switches, cameras, point of sale systems, and small control devices. Include future growth when new devices may be added. Then convert watts to volt amperes by using the load power factor. This step matters because many units are sold by VA, while devices often show watts.

Battery Capacity

Battery sizing is based on energy. The load uses watt hours during backup. The inverter also loses some energy as heat. Battery depth of discharge protects battery life, so the full rated capacity should not be used. Aging reduces useful capacity over time. The calculator includes these values to give a more realistic amp hour estimate.

Runtime Estimate

Runtime estimates use the usable battery energy. The tool multiplies battery voltage, amp hours, parallel strings, allowed discharge, aging factor, and efficiency. It then divides by adjusted load watts. The result is an estimate, not a factory guarantee. Real runtime may change with temperature, battery chemistry, and manufacturer cutoff settings.

Safety Margin

Use a safety margin for important systems. Critical loads, medical support devices, security equipment, and network hardware need extra capacity. Surge allowance is also helpful when printers, motors, or power supplies draw a higher start current. The recommended VA size uses the larger value between continuous demand and surge demand.

Utilization Check

A good plan also checks utilization. If the selected unit runs near full capacity, there is less room for growth and less tolerance for inaccurate labels. Many planners keep normal load below eighty percent of rated capacity. This gives cleaner operation and easier expansion.
