Formula Used

The calculator first converts local birth date and time into Universal Time using the entered timezone offset.

Julian Day: JD is calculated from the adjusted calendar date and time.

Tropical Moon Longitude: The Moon position is estimated with compact lunar terms based on mean longitude, elongation, anomaly, and argument of latitude.

Sidereal Moon Longitude: Sidereal Moon = Tropical Moon Longitude - Selected Ayanamsa.

Moon Sign: Sign Index = floor(Sidereal Moon Longitude / 30). Each sign covers 30 degrees.

Nakshatra: Nakshatra Index = floor(Sidereal Moon Longitude / 13.333333). Each nakshatra has four padas.

Tithi: Tithi = floor((Moon Longitude - Sun Longitude) / 12) + 1.

About Vedic Moon Sign Reading

A Vedic moon sign is the zodiac sign holding the Moon in a sidereal birth chart. It is called Rashi in many traditional texts. Many readers use it to review emotion, instinct, memory, comfort, and daily reactions. This calculator estimates that position from date, time, timezone, and selected ayanamsa. It also shows nakshatra and pada, which add a finer lunar layer. For serious work, save the original inputs beside every exported result. This prevents confusion when comparing multiple charts later.

Why Sidereal Position Matters

Western tropical charts begin from the seasonal equinox. Vedic practice usually works with a sidereal zodiac. The gap between both systems is called ayanamsa. Because this gap changes slowly, the chosen ayanamsa can move a borderline result. That is why the form lets you compare common options.

What The Result Shows

The main result is the moon sign, such as Aries, Taurus, or Pisces. The tool also gives the exact sidereal longitude, degrees inside the sign, nakshatra, pada, tithi, and phase angle. These values help you verify the calculation and reuse the output in notes.

Accuracy Notes

The calculator uses compact astronomical formulas suitable for web use. It is useful for study, quick review, and content planning. It is not a replacement for a professional ephemeris, especially near sign boundaries. If the Moon is very close to zero or thirty degrees, compare several ayanamsas and confirm the birth time.

Practical Uses

You can save results for clients, family trees, or personal research. The CSV file supports spreadsheets. The PDF file is useful for simple records. Keep the place name and notes fields filled, so each export remains clear later.

Better Input Tips

Use the exact recorded birth time whenever possible. Enter the timezone that applied at birth, not the current timezone. Daylight saving can change the offset. When a birth time is unknown, try several times and watch how the Moon degree changes through the day.

Reading The Output Carefully

Start with the sign name. Then read the degree, because early and late degrees deserve extra care. Next, review nakshatra and pada for added detail. Use the phase data as context only. Small time corrections can alter padas faster than signs.

FAQs

What is a Vedic moon sign?

It is the sidereal zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at birth. It is often called Janma Rashi. Many Vedic astrology readers use it for emotional nature, habits, comfort patterns, and daily prediction systems.

Is this calculator exact?

It gives a strong web-based estimate using compact astronomical formulas. For professional work, especially near sign or nakshatra boundaries, verify the result with a high precision ephemeris and confirmed birth time.

Which ayanamsa should I choose?

Lahiri is widely used in many Vedic astrology contexts. Krishnamurti is common for KP practice. Raman is another traditional option. Try more than one if the Moon is near a boundary.

Why does timezone matter?

The Moon moves quickly. A wrong timezone changes the Universal Time used in the calculation. That can shift the Moon degree, nakshatra pada, or even the moon sign near a boundary.

Do latitude and longitude change the moon sign?

This calculator uses geocentric lunar longitude, so latitude and longitude are stored mainly for records. They help document the birth place, but the timezone and birth time drive this moon sign calculation.

What is nakshatra pada?

Each nakshatra has four padas. A pada is a quarter division of the nakshatra. It provides a finer location for the Moon and is often used in traditional interpretation methods.

What is tithi?

Tithi is based on the angle between the Moon and Sun. Each tithi covers twelve degrees of separation. It shows the lunar day within the waxing or waning half of the cycle.

Can I export the result?

Yes. After calculation, use the CSV button for spreadsheet records. Use the PDF button for a simple printable report. Both options include the main calculated fields.
