Why Correct Size Matters
A water softener should remove enough hardness before each regeneration. It also needs enough flow for showers, laundry, and fixtures. An undersized unit regenerates too often. That wastes salt and water. An oversized unit can sit too long between cycles. That may reduce efficiency and freshness. The best size balances grain capacity, daily demand, reserve allowance, and service flow.
Hardness and Daily Use
Hardness is usually entered as grains per gallon. Some reports show milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. The calculator converts that value to grains per gallon. Iron and manganese add extra load because they use resin capacity. The adjusted hardness is multiplied by daily water use. Daily use is based on people and gallons per person. This gives the grains removed each day.
Regeneration Planning
Most homes prefer a regeneration cycle between three and fourteen days. Short cycles can waste salt. Very long cycles can leave old water in the tank. The calculator multiplies daily grains by the desired days. It then adds reserve and safety factors. The salt setting changes usable capacity per cubic foot.
